Richard Hastings Tomey was an American football coach and player. Tomey served as the head football coach at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (1977–1986), University of Arizona (1987–2000), and San Jose State University (2005–2009), compiling a career college football record of 183–145–7. His last full-time coaching position was as the special teams coach at Hawaii in 2011 under head coach Greg McMackin, who resigned after the season. Tomey was not retained by McMackin's successor, Norm Chow. Tomey served as a head coach of the victorious West team in the Casino Del Sol College All-Star Game on January 11, 2013 at Kino Stadium in Arizona.
The San Jose State Spartans are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent San José State University. SJSU sports teams compete in the Mountain West Conference (MW) at the NCAA Division I level, with football competing in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). San Jose State is one of 20 Division I members in the state of California, seven of which are FBS members. The other FBS members are fellow MW members Fresno State and San Diego State, plus Pac-12 Conference members University of California, Stanford, UCLA, and USC. SJSU has participated in athletics since it first fielded a baseball team in 1890.
George Raymond Nessman II is an American athletic administrator and former college basketball coach who is the current athletic director at Justin-Siena High School. Nessman coached at the high school and community college levels before becoming an assistant basketball coach at California in 2004. From 2005 to 2013, Nessman was the men's basketball head coach at San Jose State. He was also athletic director at Porterville College from 1995 to 2001 while also serving as men's basketball head coach.
Marcus Cole Arroyo is an American college football coach and former quarterback who was the former head coach at UNLV, from 2020 to 2022. Arroyo was relieved of his coaching duties on November 28th, 2022. He played college football at San José State University. From 2004 to 2019, Arroyo was an assistant coach, most recently at Oregon as offensive coordinator from 2017 to 2019.

The Spartans were led by third year head coach Mike MacIntyre and played their home games at Spartan Stadium. They were members of the Western Athletic Conference. This was the Spartans' final season as members of the WAC. They joined the Mountain West Conference on July 1, 2013. They finished the season 11–2, 5–1 in WAC play to finish in second place. They were invited to the Military Bowl where they defeated Bowling Green.

The Bill Walsh Legacy Game is the name given to the San Jose State–Stanford football rivalry. It is a college football rivalry between the San Jose State Spartans football team of San José State University and the Stanford Cardinal football team of Stanford University. The two teams have played each other 67 times since 1900. The rivalry is currently on hiatus due to non-conference scheduling conflicts. Stanford leads the series 52–14–1.

The Spartans were led by fourth-year head coach Brent Brennan and played their home games at CEFCU Stadium and Sam Boyd Stadium as members of the Mountain West Conference. They finished the regular season 6–0 in Mountain West play and defeated Boise State in the Mountain West championship game. This was the Spartans' first Mountain West championship win and 17th overall conference title. The championship victory also marked San Jose State's first win over Boise State in program history.

In their first year fielding an American football team, the Spartans lost in their sole contest against the local YMCA team of San Jose. The game technically occurred during 1893, but it represented the 1892 academic year and so that is the season it is counted.

In their third year of play, the Spartans achieved their first tie, a 6–6 decision against nearby College of the Pacific. The contest was played in late January 1896, but as was done in 1892, their game was counted in the 1895 academic year.

In their first and only year under head coach Thad McKay, the Spartans compiled their first undefeated record at 5–0–1, and outscored their opponents by a total of 80 to 17. Many other milestones characterized the 1898 season, including the program's first shutout, and intercollegiate win, and their first season in which they participated in multiple games.

In their only season under head coach Jess Woods, the Spartans compiled a 6–3–1 record, their first ten-game schedule. The season was highlighted by a record number of wins (six) and losses (three). They outscored their opponents by a total of 120 to 69, although they were outscored 56 to 11 by collegiate teams.
