The 2002 FIFA World Cup, also branded as Korea/Japan 2002, was the 17th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial football world championship for men's national teams organized by FIFA. It was held from 31 May to 30 June 2002 at sites in South Korea and Japan, with its final match hosted by Japan at International Stadium in Yokohama. During the opening ceremony, the championship was declared opened by President of South Korea Kim Dae-jung.
The 1966 FIFA World Cup was the eighth FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams. It was played in England from 11 to 30 July 1966. England defeated West Germany 4–2 in the final to win their first ever World Cup title. The final was level at 2–2 after 90 minutes and went to extra time, when Geoff Hurst scored two goals to complete his hat-trick, the first to be scored in a men's World Cup final. England were the fifth nation to win the event, and the third host nation to win after Uruguay in 1930 and Italy in 1934. Two time reigning champions Brazil failed to get past the group stages as they were defeated by Hungary and Portugal. It was the first time that defending champions were eliminated in the group stages after Italy in 1950. This would not occur again until 36 years later. It was opened by Queen Elizabeth II during the opening ceremony.
The 1998 FIFA World Cup was the 16th FIFA World Cup, the football world championship for men's national teams. The finals tournament was held in France from 10 June to 12 July 1998. The country was chosen as the host nation by FIFA for the second time in the history of the tournament, defeating Morocco in the bidding process. It was the ninth time that it was held in Europe. Spanning 32 days, it was the longest World Cup tournament ever held.

It took place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014, after the country was awarded the hosting rights in 2007. The 1968–69 European Cup Winners' Cup was the ninth season of the European Cup Winners' Cup, a club football competition organised by UEFA for the cup winners from each of its member associations. The tournament was won by Czechoslovakian side Slovan Bratislava, who beat Spanish club Barcelona 3–2 in the final in Basel, Switzerland. It was the first time a club from the Eastern Bloc won the title. A number of withdrawals by Eastern European clubs from the first round as a result of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia led to several walkovers and byes that lasted into the second round.
The 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup was the first edition after a major change of the competition format. There were only three rounds instead of five, and eleven tournament co-winners qualified for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. Also, for the first time in the modern history of the competition, an outright winner was highlighted from the 11 co-winners of the Cup, with that honour going to the final-round Intertoto winner that advanced farthest in the UEFA Cup. This honour went to Newcastle United.

The 1937–47 Nordic Football Championship was the fourth Nordic Football Championship staged. Four Nordic countries participated, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The tournament was arranged by the Football Association of Finland. The trophy was named Suomen Karhut. The tournament which was originally supposed to end in 1940, but the Second World War interrupted it and the last six matches were not played until 1947.

The North, Central American and Caribbean zone was allocated 2 places in the final tournament. Mexico, the World Cup host, qualified automatically, leaving 1 spot open for competition between 17 teams. Canada earned their first major title and clinched qualification on 14 September 1985 to participate in their first World Cup after beating Honduras 2–1 at King George V Park in St. John's, Newfoundland.

The 1928–29 National Challenge Cup was the annual open cup held by the United States Football Association now known as the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This edition of the soccer tournament featured 100 entrants. In this edition the Western bracket played the first round in December 1928 while the Eastern section chose to wait out the poor weather and began the first-round games in February 1929. The Cup final, which drew 21,583 spectators, broke the record for the largest crowd to see a Cup final, and remained the largest crowd, until 2010, when the Seattle Sounders FC defeat Columbus Crew in front of 31,311 spectators.

The 2010 CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship was the fifth edition of the CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship. The tournament was hosted by Guatemala, and all matches were played at the Estadio Cementos Progreso. The United States were the defending champions, having won the 2008 tournament, their second regional championship at the under-20 level. The top three sides at the 2010 tournament earned qualification to the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. The tournament was won by the United States, who defeated Mexico in the final, 1–0. Costa Rica secured the final qualification position by defeating Canada in the third place match, 1–0.

The 1939 Norwegian Football Cup was the 38th season of the Norwegian annual knockout football tournament. The tournament was open for all members of NFF, except those from Northern Norway. This final is the only final held in Tønsberg and was played at Tønsberg Gressbane on 15 October 1939. In the final, two-time former winners Sarpsborg won 2–1 against Skeid, who played their first final, and secured their third title. Fredrikstad were the defending champions, but were eliminated by Sarpsborg in the semifinal.
The 2012 United States women's national soccer team season was dominated by the 2012 Women's Olympic Football Tournament. The start of the year saw the team compete in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament and then in July they participated in the main event itself. The team won both tournaments. In between they also played in Algarve Cup, the Kirin Challenge Cup and the 2012 Sweden Invitational. They also won the latter tournament.
