The 1972 National Challenge Cup was the 59th edition of the United States Soccer Football Association's annual open soccer championship. Teams from the North American Soccer League declined to participate. Elizabeth S.C. defeated the San Pedro Yugoslavs in the final game.

Franz Anton Beckenbauer is a German former professional footballer and manager. In his playing career he was nicknamed Der Kaiser because of his elegant style, dominance and leadership on the field, and also as his first name "Franz" is reminiscent of the Austrian emperors. He is widely regarded to be one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. A versatile player who started out as a midfielder, Beckenbauer made his name as a central defender. He is often credited as having invented the role of the modern sweeper (libero).

Arena has had a long and distinguished coaching career and is considered to be one of the most successful coaches in North American soccer history, having won five College Cup titles and five MLS Cup titles. He was the United States national team head coach at the 1996 Summer Olympics, the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2006 FIFA World Cup, head coach of the New York Red Bulls, D.C. United, LA Galaxy, and the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer, and coached Virginia Cavaliers men's soccer to several college soccer championships. He is the U.S. soccer team's longest-serving head coach.

Adana Demirspor is a sports club based in Adana, Turkey. Founded by railway workers in 1940, the club were competitive in eight sports until 1980s; then were active only with the football department until 2020 and recently re-opened the departments of water polo and martial arts. Football team's thriving success at the Adana League and the water polo team's unbeaten National League titles in the first three decades, built a large worker fan base in the city and attracted landowners to finance the club. Believing that the worker supported, landowner financed, TCDD governed club are alienating them, middle-class merchants and artisans founded Adanaspor in 1954 and competition among the two clubs for the citywide support and domination, created one of the fierce rivalries of Turkish football which continues to this day as Adana derby.

Glenn "Mooch" Myernick was an American soccer player and coach. He won the 1976 Hermann Trophy as that year’s outstanding collegiate player. He then spent eight seasons in the North American Soccer League and one in Major Indoor Soccer League. Myernick also earned 10 caps with the U.S. national team. After retiring from playing professionally, Myernick spent over twenty years as a professional and national team coach.
Alexandre "Alex" Ely was a Brazilian-American soccer midfielder. Ely played extensively in the U.S., Canada and Brazil winning multiple league and cup titles. He also earned four caps with the U.S. national team between 1960 and 1965. In addition to his extensive professional resume, Ely coached at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He was inducted into the United States National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997.

Richard Davy is a former Jamaican soccer player who was the architect of the winning goal which catapulted the Howard University Bisons to the 1974 Division 1 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship. That Howard soccer team posted a perfect 19-0-0 season record, a record which still stands unbeaten and unmatched by any other Collegiate soccer team after over 35 years. Richard's defense-splitting dribbling foray down the left flank, shortly after the start of the fourth overtime in the NCAA Championship game, left two St. Louis University defenders faked-out off of the field as he centered a crossing pass which beat goalkeeper Rob Valero and left teammate Kendu Illodigwe with an easy tap-in into the open goal.

The 2021 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was planned to be the 107th edition of the U.S. Open Cup, a knockout cup competition in American soccer. After the 2020 competition was suspended and ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Soccer Federation announced that qualification for the 2021 Open Cup would be canceled and all 100 teams that had qualified for that competition would be invited back. On February 8, 2021, the U.S. Soccer Federation backtracked and stated that only 24 teams would be allowed to participate in a new abbreviated tournament, with the exact qualification details still being determined.
