In 1945, in the still existing Democratic Federal Yugoslavia, football once again began to be played nationally after a six-year hiatus due to World War II.

The first post-war national tournament was a hastily organized week-long competition in cup format from September 3 until September 9, 1945. Each federal unit (socialist republic) within FPR Yugoslavia gathered a representative team. There were six teams representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia, one team representing the autonomous region within Serbia, Vojvodina, and the final team being the Yugoslav People's Army (Jugoslovenska Narodna Armija, JNA) football team.

The 1926 National Championship was a football competition held within the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. The two dominant teams of pre-World War II Yugoslav football, Jugoslavija and Građanski, began laying the foundations of the next seven decades of a deeply rooted rivalry between Zagreb and Belgrade. Both teams dominated the competition with comfortable margins, but were quite evenly matched in the finals.

The 1946–47 Yugoslav First League season was the first season of the First Federal League, the top level association football competition of SFR Yugoslavia, which ended the six-year period in which national football competitions were suspended due to World War II. It was also the first season in which the Football Association of Yugoslavia (FSJ) introduced the modern league system which included promotion and relegation between tiers of the football pyramid, as pre-war national championships held between 1927 and 1940 during Kingdom of Yugoslavia employed either a play-off tournament or a mini league format contested by regional champions.

FK Mačva Šabac Association football club in Šabac, Serbia

Fudbalski klub Mačva Šabac, commonly known as Mačva Šabac, is a football club from Šabac, Serbia. One of the oldest football clubs in Serbia, their nickname is " The Provincial Uruguayans " The nickname was used for the first time in 1927 when the Uruguay National Football Team were one of the best teams in the world and due to local people and media comparing Macva's style to that of the Uruguayan team, the main daily newspaper Politika consistently used the nickname Provincial Uruguayans.In the period of Yugoslavia, Macva mostly played in the lower tiers of the football system but did spend two seasons in national top flight of Yugoslavia, it was in seasons 1951 and 1952 Yugoslav First League. Afterwards, they would spend the next six decades in the Yugoslav lower-leagues but were a stable and respected lower tier club in the country. Macva has experienced greatest success since Serbia became independent, reaching the top tier the Serbian Super Liga for the first time ever in the season of 2017–18 Serbian SuperLiga. The club's name "Macva" is a geographical and historical region in the northwest of Central Serbia, on a fertile plain between the Sava and Drina rivers. The chief town is Šabac. The most famous player to represent the club is Miroslav Djukic who would go on to play two UEFA Champions League finals with Valencia CF.

SK Jugoslavija association football club in Serbia

Sportski klub Jugoslavija, commonly known as SK Jugoslavija was a Serbian football club from Belgrade. It was originally formed as SK Velika Srbija in 1913 and changed its name to SK Jugoslavija in 1919. They were among the most popular Serbian and Yugoslav clubs, and they were nicknamed as "Crveni" because of their red shirts, in opposition to their greatest rivals BSK, who wore blue and were known as "Plavi". Until 1941 the sports society Jugoslavija, beside football, also included sections for athletics, cycling, winter sports, basketball, boxing, wrestling, swimming and table tennis.
