The 1956 Ariyalur train accident was a train accident on 23 November 1956 in Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu, India, where a train fell into the Marudaiyaru River, killing over 150 passengers after a bridge collapsed as a result of damage by torrential rain.
It was until then the worst train accident ever in independent India [2] and is still one of the country's deadliest train disasters. [1] The accident came 2.5 months after the 1956 Mahbubnagar train accident, a similar accident in Mahbubnagar.
Due to torrential rain, in the night of 23 November 1956, pillars of a bridge that ran over the Marudaiyaru River were heavily damaged by flooding at Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu, around two miles from Ariyalur railway station. [3] [1] Half an hour after a train crossed the bridge, the bridge collapsed when Express train number 803 from Chennai to Tuticorin with 800 passengers tried to cross the bridge. The train with 13 carriages plunged into the Marudyar river. [1] The first seven carriages were fully submerged. [3] [2] Around 200 people were buried in the debris, many were never recovered. [4] Due to the darkness, passengers mistook the river in full flow for sand, and drowned after they jumped into it. [3]
During the day it was reported that around 250 people were killed. Two days later, "only" 150 bodies were recovered. With the exact number being unknown, as only the bodies that were found were counted, at least 154 people were killed [1] and over 110 people were injured. [4] [1]
Indian railway minister Lal Bahadur Shastri wanted to take political and moral responsibility for the accident and offered his resignation to prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. While it was not accepted after the 1956 Mahbubnagar train accident in September, it was accepted this time. [5] [6] He resigned on 7 December 1956. [3]
Lal Bahadur Shastri was an Indian politician and statesman who served as the second prime minister of India from 1964 to 1966. He previously served as the sixth home minister of India from 1961 to 1963.
The Tangiwai train disaster was a deadly railway accident that occurred at 10:21 p.m. on 24 December 1953, when a railway bridge over the Whangaehu River collapsed beneath an express passenger train at Tangiwai, North Island, New Zealand. The locomotive and the first six carriages derailed into the river, killing 151 people. The subsequent board of inquiry found that the accident was caused by the collapse of the tephra dam holding back nearby Mount Ruapehu's crater lake, creating a rapid mudflow (lahar) in the Whangaehu River, which destroyed one of the bridge piers at Tangiwai only minutes before the train reached the bridge. The volcano itself was not erupting at the time. The disaster remains New Zealand's worst rail accident.

In the Indian state of Bihar, on June 6, 1981, a passenger train carrying more than 800 passengers between Mansi and Saharsa, derailed while crossing a bridge and plunged into the river Bagmati.
On 19 October 1987, a train on the Heart of Wales line derailed and fell into the River Towy due to the partial collapse of the Glanrhyd Bridge near Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire. Four people died as a result of the tragedy; the driver and three of the passengers drowned.
On the evening of 4 December 1957, two trains crashed in dense fog on the South Eastern Main Line near Lewisham in south-east London, causing the deaths of 90 people and injuring 173. An electric train to Hayes had stopped at a signal under the bridge, and the following steam train to Ramsgate crashed into it, destroying a carriage and causing the bridge to collapse onto the steam train. The bridge had to be completely removed; it was over a week before the lines under the bridge were reopened, and another month before the bridge was rebuilt and traffic allowed over it.
The Gaisal train collision occurred on 2 August 1999, when two trains carrying about 2,500 people collided at the remote station of Gaisal in West Bengal, India. Owing to a signalling error, both trains were using the same track on a day when three of the four tracks on the line were closed for maintenance. Their combined speeds were so great that the trains exploded on impact, killing at least 285 people.
The Kadalundi train disaster occurred in India on 22 June 2001, when the Mangalore-Chennai Mail passenger train was crossing over the Kadalundi river. Three carriages fell into the water, with 59 people reported killed or missing, and up to 300 believed injured. The official inquiry concluded that the derailment was caused by one pillar of the 140-year old bridge sinking into the riverbed, following recent heavy rain, though this finding has been challenged.
Kumaraswami KamarajBR, popularly known as Kamarajar was an Indian independence activist and politician who served as the Chief Minister of Madras State from 13 April 1954 to 2 October 1963. He was the founder and the president of the Indian National Congress (Organisation), widely acknowledged as the "Kingmaker" in Indian politics during the 1960s. He also served as the president of the Indian National Congress for two terms i.e. four years between 1964–1967 and was responsible for the elevation of Lal Bahadur Shastri to the position of Prime Minister of India after Jawaharlal Nehru's death and Indira Gandhi after Shastri's death. He was the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha during 1952–1954 and 1969–1975. He was known for his simplicity and integrity. He played a major role in developing the infrastructure of the Madras state and worked to improve the quality of life of the needy and the disadvantaged.
On 13 January 1985, an express train derailed on a curved bridge over the gorge of the Awash River in Awash, Ethiopia. The official death toll was 428, with more than 500 injuries.
The Nellore train fire occurred on 30 July 2012, when the Chennai-bound Tamil Nadu Express train caught fire at 4:22 am near Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India. At least 32 passengers died and 27 were injured. The fire gutted the S-11 sleeper coach in 20 minutes. A railway emergency crew prevented the fire from spreading to the other coaches.
Ariyalur railway station is the main railway station in Ariyalur, headquarters of the Ariyalur district in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located on the chord line between Viluppuram and Tiruchirappalli. For administrative reasons, it comes under the Tiruchirappalli railway division of the Southern Railway zone.
On 20 November 2016, the Indore–Patna Express 19321, a scheduled train from Indore to Patna, derailed near Pukhrayan, Kanpur, India, resulting in the death of 150 passengers and injuries to at least another 150.
The 1997 Indian Federation Cup, also known as 1997 Kalyani Black Label Federation Cup due to sponsorship reasons, was the 20th season of the Indian Federation Cup. The tournament was held between 14 June and 20 July 1997. It was won by Salgaocar, who beat defending champions East Bengal 2–1 in the final. Salgaocar's captain Bruno Coutinho was named player of the tournament.
The 1987–88 Santosh Trophy was the 44th edition of the Santosh Trophy, the main State competition for football in India. It was held in Kollam, Kerala. Punjab defeated Kerala 5–4 in sudden death in the final to win the competition for the sixth time.
On June 2, 2023, three trains collided in Balasore district in Odisha state of eastern India. The Coromandel Express entered the passing loop instead of the main line near Bahanaga Bazar railway station at full speed and collided with a goods train. Due to the high speed of the Coromandel Express, its 21 coaches derailed and three of those collided with the oncoming SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah Superfast Express on the adjacent track.
The 1956 Mahbubnagar train accident was a train accident in Hyderabad state, India on the Secunderabad-Dronachalam line between Jadcherla and Mahbubnagar on 2 September 1956. A train fell into a river killing at least 125 passengers after a bridge collapsed as a result of damages by torrential rain.
