The Gibalta rail accident occurred on 31 March 1952, on the Linha de Cascais (Cascais line) in Portugal. It was a derailment due to landslides caused by adverse weather conditions and the bad conservation status of the surrounding land. The accident resulted in 10 dead and 38 injured. [1]

Linha de Cascais Portuguese railway line

Linha de Cascais is a Portuguese railway line which connects the municipalities of Lisbon, Oeiras, and Cascais. The line starts in Lisbon, at Cais do Sodré and ends in Cascais. On the Lisbon urban trains' diagram it is shown in yellow. The first section, from Cascais to Pedrouços, was opened in 1889. The line was completed in 1895. It was the first heavy rail line to be electrified in Portugal, in 1926, and the last to be integrated into CP, in 1977.

Boca do Inferno

Boca do Inferno is a chasm located in the seaside cliffs close to the Portuguese city of Cascais, in the District of Lisbon. The seawater has access to the deep bottom of the chasm and vigorously strikes its rocky walls, making it a popular tourist attraction. The cave was the first to be depicted in moving pictures, in the 1896 British film A Sea Cave Near Lisbon, which shows waves breaking at the mouth of the cave.

The Sanctuary of Peninha is situated in the Sintra Mountains in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, in the Lisbon District of Portugal. It stands at an altitude of 448 metres on top of a rocky outcrop, which provides views over the coastline and inland areas. In addition to a baroque chapel, completed in 1710, the location contains the Palace of Peninha, which dates from 1918, as well as remains of a hermitage. The interiors of neither the chapel nor the palace can presently be visited.
