Portugal has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 54 times since its debut at the 1964 contest. Since then it has missed five contests. The contest is broadcast in Portugal by Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). Portugal won the contest for the first time in 2017 and hosted the 2018 contest in Lisbon.
Portugal participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with the song "Amar" written by José da Ponte, Alexandre Honrado and Ernesto Leite. The song was performed by the duo 2B, which was internally selected by the Portuguese broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) to represent the nation at the 2005 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. 2B and "Amar" were announced as the Portuguese entry on 22 March 2005 and the song was presented to the public on 1 April 2005.

The Portuguese broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) organised the national final Festival da Canção 2007 in order to select the Portuguese entry for the 2007 contest in Helsinki, Finland. The competition took place on 10 March 2007 where the winner was selected exclusively by public televoting. "Dança comigo" performed by Sabrina emerged as the winner with 8,874 votes.
Festival da Canção or Festival RTP da Canção is the name given to the national festival produced and broadcast by Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) to select the Portuguese entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. It was first held in 1964.
Portugal participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Senhora do mar " written by Andrej Babić and Carlos Coelho. The song was performed by Vânia Fernandes. The Portuguese broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) organised the national final Festival da Canção 2008 in order to select the Portuguese entry for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. The competition took place on 9 March 2008 where the winner was selected exclusively by public televoting. "Senhora do mar " performed by Vânia Fernandes emerged as the winner with 17,650 votes.
Belgium was represented by Tonia, with the song "Un peu de poivre, un peu de sel", at the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 5 March in Luxembourg City. Tonia was chosen internally to be the Belgian representative, and the song was chosen in the national final on 25 January.
Belgium was represented by Claude Lombard, with the song "Quand tu reviendras", at the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 6 April in London. The song was chosen at the Belgian preselection, held on 13 February. Former Belgian representative Tonia (1966) and future participant Nicole Josy also took part.

After a semi-final and a final which took place in March 2014, "Quero ser tua" performed by Suzy emerged as the winner after gaining 41.56% of the public televote.

In August 2016, the Portuguese broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) announced that they would be returning to the Eurovision Song Contest after a one-year absence following their withdrawal in 2016 due to poor results in previous contests and the broadcaster's insufficient promotion of music-related content. RTP organised the national final Festival da Canção 2017 in order to select the Portuguese entry for the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. After two semi-finals and a final which took place in February and March 2017, "Amar pelos dois" performed by Salvador Sobral emerged as the winner after achieving the highest score following the combination of votes from seven regional juries and a public televote.
Portugal was represented by Madalena Iglésias, with the song "Ele e ela", at the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 5 March in Luxembourg City. "Ele e ela" was chosen as the Portuguese entry at the Grande Prémio TV da Canção Portuguesa on 15 January.

RTP returned to the Eurovision Song Contest after a one-year absence following their withdrawal in 2002 as one of the bottom six countries in the 2001 contest. The national final Canção para Eurovisão 2003 was organised on 2 March 2003 in order to select the song that Rita Guerra would perform, and the winning song was selected exclusively by public televoting. "Deixa-me sonhar " emerged as the winning song with 75% of the votes.
