Daman and Diu was a former union territory in northwestern India. With an area of 112 km2 (43 sq mi), it was the smallest administrative subdivision of India on the mainland. The territory comprised two districts, Damaon and Dio island, geographically separated by the Gulf of Khambat. The state of Gujarat and the Arabian Sea bordered the territory. A Portuguese colony since the 1500s, the territories were taken by India with the Annexation of Goa in 1961. Daman and Diu were administered as part of the union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu between 1961 and 1987, after the Goa Opinion Poll they became a separate union territory. Shashikala Kakodkar, popularly known as Tai, was a prominent leader of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). She served as the Chief Minister of Goa, Daman and Diu on two occasions, and also was the President of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. She is the first woman to serve as the Chief Minister of Goa, Daman and Diu.

The United Goans Party is a political party in state of Goa. It was formed in 1963 in the former union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu, with Jack de Sequeira as its party leader, when multiple regional parties merged during the Konkani language agitation.

Uday Bhembre is an Indian lawyer, Konkani writer and a former member of the Goa Legislative Assembly. He is noted for his role as the editor of the Konkani daily, Sunaparant, and as a Konkani language activist. Bhembre is also widely known as the lyricist of the famed Goan Konkani language song Channeache Rati.

The Konkani language agitations were a series of protests and demonstrations in India, concerning the uncertain future and the official status of the Konkani language. They were held by Goans in the then union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu governed at the time by the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. The protests involved citizen journalism, student activism and political demonstrations.

Narayan Srinivasa Fugro was an Indian politician. He served as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Goa, Daman and Diu between February 24, 1972 and January 20, 1980.

Achyut Kashinath Sinai Usgaonkar, also known as A. K. S. Usgaonkar, was a leader of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. He served as cabinet rank minister in Shashikala Kakodkar ministry of Goa, Daman and Diu from 13 August 1977 to 27 April 1979. Prior to that Usgaonkar was deputy minister in Dayanand Bandodkar ministry and as deputy speaker of Goa, Daman and Diu Legislative Assembly.

Roque Santana Fernandes was an Indian politician and freedom fighter from Goa. Fernandes was a Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly from 1967 to 1977, representing the Cuncolim Assembly constituency. He is popularly known as the "Father of Goan Democracy" and was responsible for the introduction of democracy by objecting to the Lt. Governor’s nomination through his satyagraha. He was one of the prominent people that contributed to Goa's freedom struggle.

Jose Mario Emerciane Vaz, also known as Jose Mario Vaz, was an Indian politician and freedom fighter from Goa. He was a former Member of Goa Legislative Assembly and represented the Cuncolim Assembly constituency from 1980 to 1984. Vaz also contributed in the Goa Liberation Movement.
