Judo is generally categorized as a modern Japanese martial art, which has since evolved into an Olympic event. The sport was created in 1882 by Jigoro Kano (嘉納治五郎) as a physical, mental, and moral pedagogy in Japan. With its origins coming from jujutsu, judo's most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or take down an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defences are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice. It was also referred to as Kanō Jiu-Jitsu until the introduction to the Olympic event. A judo practitioner is called a "judoka", and the judo uniform is called "judogi".
The 1958 Asian Games, officially the Third Asian Games and commonly known as Tokyo 1958, was a multi-sport event held in Tokyo, Japan, from 24 May to 1 June 1958. It was governed by the Asian Games Federation. A total of 1,820 athletes representing 20 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the Games. The program featured competitions in 13 different sports encompassing 97 events, including four non-Olympic sports, judo, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Four of these competition sports – field hockey, table tennis, tennis and volleyball – were introduced for the first time in the Asian Games.
Judo competed in eight different weight classes for men and women at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. All competition was held in the Qatar Sports Club Indoor Hall.
Judo competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing were held from August 9 to August 15 at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium.

Judo at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will feature around 386 judoka competing in 15 events, seven each for both men and women as well as a new mixed team event. The 2020 Summer Olympics was postponed in March 2020 and planned for 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020 Asian Oceania Judo Championships is a Judo event expected to take place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The championships were originally scheduled to take place from 17 to 19 April, then from 26 to 29 November, but were postponed both times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is eventually cancelled.
The Judo Union of Asia (JUA) is the governing body of judo in Asia. It is one of the five continental confederations making up the International Judo Federation (IJF). JUA was formed in 1956 in Tokyo (Japan), with Chinese Taipei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Philippines and Thailand being the founder members. JUA has headquarters in Kuwait and consists of 39 member federations.
The Pakistan women's national judo team represents Pakistan in international judo competitions. It is administered by the Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF). Members of the team compete in competitions including regional games.
