Evonne Cawley and Helen Gourlay were the defending champions. [1] Cawley did not compete. Gourlay, first-seeded, won the title together with fellow Australian Dianne Fromholtz in the final after defeating second-seeded Betsy Nagelsen and Kerry Reid. [1]

The 1977 Australian Open (January) was a tennis tournament played on outdoor grass courts at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament was held from 3 to 9 January 1977. Due to a scheduling change, two Australian Opens took place in 1977 with the second taking place in December.

Chris O'Neil defeated Betsy Nagelsen in the final, 6–3, 7–6(7–3) to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1978 Australian Open.

Two-time defending champion Chris Evert defeated Wendy Turnbull in the final, 7–6, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1977 US Open. It was her third US Open title and her seventh major singles title overall.

Virginia Wade defeated Betty Stöve in the final, 4–6, 6–3, 6–1 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1977 Wimbledon Championships. It was her third and last major singles title. As of 2023, she remains the most recent Briton to win the title.

Evonne Goolagong defeated Helen Gourlay in the final, 6–3, 6–0 to win the December edition of the women's singles tennis tournament at the 1977 Australian Open. It was her sixth major singles title. As of 2023, this was the last women's singles final to be contested by two Australians.

The 1976 New South Wales Open, also known by its sponsored name Marlboro New South Wales Open, was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament played on outdoor grass courts at the White City Stadium in Sydney, Australia. The men's was part of the 1977 Colgate-Palmolive Grand Prix circuit. It was the 84th edition of the event and was held from 26 December 1976 through 1 January 1977. The singles titles were won by Kerry Reid and 33-year-old Tony Roche. It was Roche's fourth singles title after 1967, 1969 and 1974. Roche won AUS$13,500 first-prize money while Reid's title was rewarded with AUS$5,000 prize money.

Third-seeded pair Kathy Jordan and Anne Smith won the title after defeating Penny Johnson and Paula Smith in the final.
