This was the fourteenth season for the League Cup, which was again known as the John Player Special Trophy for sponsorship purposes.
Hull Kingston Rovers claimed the trophy by beating their local rivals Hull F.C. by the score of 12–0 in the final. The match was played at Boothferry Park, Kingston upon Hull on 26 January 1985 and the attendance was 25,326. Gate receipts were £69,355 (equivalent to £265,000in 2023). [1]
As of October 2024, this marked the last time that Hull Kingston Rovers won a major trophy in a final. Most recently in the Super League era, Hull Kingston Rovers lost the 2024 Super League Grand Final against the Wigan Warriors, who also claimed the 2024 season's League Leader's Shield, as well as the 2015 and 2023 Challenge Cup Finals to Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards respectively.

Hull Kingston Rovers are a professional rugby league club based in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England. The club play home games at Craven Park and compete in Super League, the top tier of British rugby league.
The 1984–85 Rugby Football League season was the 90th ever season of professional rugby league football in Britain. Sixteen teams played each other from August 1984 until May 1985 for the Slalom Lager Championship. Also these 16 teams plus several more competed for the Challenge Cup.

The 1968–69 Rugby League Lancashire Cup competition was the fifty-sixth occasion on which the Lancashire Cup completion had been held. St. Helens won the trophy by beating Oldham by the score of 30-2. The match was played at Central Park, Wigan,. The attendance was 17,008 and receipts were £4644. This was the second of two consecutive Lancashire Cup final wins for St. Helens, and what is more, the seventh of the seven occasions on which the club will win the trophy in nine successive seasons.

The 1984–85 Yorkshire Cup was the seventy-seventh occasion on which the Yorkshire Cup competition had been held. This season there were no junior/amateur clubs taking part, no new entrants and no "leavers" and so the total of entries remained the same at sixteen. In this year's final, Hull F.C. beat close neighbours and fierce rivals Hull Kingston Rovers by the score of 29-12. The match was played at Boothferry Park, Kingston upon Hull. The city was formally in the East Riding of Yorkshire, followed by Humberside and is now (back) in the ceremonial county of the East Riding of Yorkshire. It was moved to this stadium from the provisionally reserved venue due to the interest showed by fans and after requests by both finalists, and the organisers were rewarded with a crowd of 25,237 and gate receipts more than doubled from last year's £33,572 to £68,639. This is only the third meeting of these two clubs in the Yorkshire Cup final, on the two previous occasions Hull Kingston Rovers defeated Hull F.C., in 1920-21 by 2-0 and 1967 by 8-7; this time it was revenge and by a wider margin. This is the third successive Yorkshire Cup final victory for Hull F.C. And the first of two successive Final appearances by Hull Kingston Rovers.
