Al Ahly Sporting Club, commonly referred to as Al Ahly, is an Egyptian professional sports club based in Cairo. It is one of the most successful football clubs in the world based on total trophies won. Its professional football team plays in the Egyptian Premier League, the top tier in the Egyptian football league system. The club was founded on 24 April 1907, as a gathering place for Cairo's Student Unions.
The CAF Champions League, known for sponsorship reasons as the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and formerly the African Cup of Champions Clubs, is an annual club football competition organized by the Confederation of African Football and contested by top-division African clubs, deciding the competition winners through a round robin group stage to qualify for a double-legged knockout stage, and then a single leg final. It is one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the world and the most prestigious club competition in African football.

The 1994 African Cup Winners' Cup football club tournament was won by DC Motema Pembe in two-legged final victory against Kenya Breweries, who were later renamed to Tusker F.C. in 1999. This was the twentieth season that the tournament took place for the winners of each African country's domestic cup. Thirty-five sides entered the competition and despite the relatively small number of competitors, nine teams were either disqualified or decided to withdraw during the preliminary and first rounds of the competition, where AS Cimelta and Black Africa withdrew before 1st leg of the preliminary round, Al Ahly withdraw before the 1st leg of the first round due to political reasons while Renaissance withdrew after the 1st leg of the first round. On the other hand, teams from Benin, Uganda and Zimbabwe were disqualified because their federations were in debt to CAF; Power Dynamos were disqualified because the Zambian federation did not name its entrant in time as well as the Mauritanian side ASC SNIM. Another two teams withdrew before the 1st leg of the second round, Rayon Sports from Rwanda and LPRC Oilers from Liberia.

This was the twenty-third season that the tournament took place for the winners of each African country's domestic cup. Thirty-seven sides entered the competition. Teams from Mauritania were disqualified because their federation was in debt to CAF. Great Olympics, Posta and Zasmure all withdrew before the 1st leg of the first round while Chapungu withdrew after the 1st leg. Olympique Béja withdrew before 1st leg of the second round and finally, Pretoria City withdrew before the 1st leg of the quarterfinals.

This was the twenty-third season that the tournament took place for the winners of each African country's domestic cup. Forty-one sides entered the competition. Teams from Niger and the Central African Republic were disqualified because their federations were in debt to CAF. Club 'S' Namakia from Madagascar withdrew before the 1st leg of the preliminary round, Maxaquene from Mozambique withdrew before the 1st leg of the first round while Racing Bafoussam from Cameroon was disqualified for not showing up in time for the 1st leg. The last team to withdraw from the competition was Dragons from Zaire before the 1st leg of the second round.

The 2002 African Cup Winners' Cup football club tournament was won by Wydad AC in two-legged final victory against Asante Kotoko This was the twenty-eighth season that the tournament took place for the winners of each African country's domestic cup. Thirty-seven sides entered the competition. Three teams were disqualified for not showing up during the different stages of the competition, starting with Togolese side Sara Sport who failed to arrive for the 1st leg of the preliminary round, then South Africans Kaizer Chiefs who failed to arrive for the 2nd leg of the first round and finally the Réunion representative Jeanne d'Arc who failed to show up for their 2nd leg match of the second round.
The last two teams both failed to show up for their 2nd leg match against the Malagasy side US Transfoot.
