The 1988 South American Under-16 Football Championship (Spanish : Campeonato Sudamericano Sub-16 Ecuador 1988, Brazilian Portuguese : Campeonato Sul-Americano Sub-16 Ecuador 1988) was the 3rd edition of the South American Under-17 Football Championship, a football competition for the under-16 national teams in South America organized by CONMEBOL. It was held in Ecuador from 15 to 30 October 1988. [1]

Contents

Brazil were crowned champions, and together with Argentina and Colombia, which were the top three teams of this tournament, qualified for the 1989 FIFA U-16 World Championship in Scotland.

The tournament exclusively requires players to be born between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2008 to be eligible, that is, they must be a maximum of 17 years old and at least 15 years old.

The ten national teams involved in the tournament were required to register a squad of 22 players, of which three had to be goalkeepers. Only players in these squads were eligible to take part in the tournament. The tournament exclusively requires players to be born on or after 1 January 1998 to be eligible.

The 2023 South American U-15 Championship will be an international football tournament to be held in Bolivia from 4 to 19 October 2024. The ten national teams involved in the tournament were required to register a squad of a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 22 players, including at least two goalkeepers. Only players in these squads are eligible to take part in the competition. The tournament exclusively requires players to be born on or after 1 January 2008 to be eligible, i.e. they must be a maximum of 16 years old by the end of the calendar year in which the competition is played, with no minimum age limit.
