Susan Sloane was the defending champion, but lost in the semifinals to Helen Kelesi.
Leila Meskhi won the title by defeating Kelesi 6–2, 6–3 in the final. [1] Meskhi became the first soviet woman in 15 years to win a professional tournament at the United States, after Olga Morozova won at Philadelphia in 1974. [2]

Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated the two-time defending champion Steffi Graf in the final, 7–6(8–6), 3–6, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1989 French Open. This ended Graf's streak of major singles titles at five, and was the only loss she suffered at the majors in the 1989 season. Graf served for the championship at 5–3 in the third set, but lost the game to love and won only three more points from that point. Sánchez Vicario was just 17 years old at the time, and it was the first of her three French Open titles.
Virginia Wade defeated Evonne Goolagong in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1972 Australian Open.
Chris Evert defeated Olga Morozova in the final, 6–0, 6–4 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1974 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first Wimbledon singles title and her second major singles title overall.
