Gabriela Beatriz Sabatini is an Argentine former professional tennis player. A former world No. 3 in both singles and doubles, Sabatini was one of the leading players from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, amassing 41 titles. In singles, Sabatini won the 1990 US Open, the Tour Finals in 1988 and 1994, and was runner-up at Wimbledon 1991, the 1988 US Open, and the silver medalist at the 1988 Olympics. In doubles, Sabatini won Wimbledon in 1988 partnering Steffi Graf, and reached three French Open finals. Among Open era players who did not reach the world No. 1 ranking, Sabatini has the most wins over reigning world No. 1 ranked players. In 2006, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and in 2018 Tennis Magazine ranked her as the 20th-greatest female player of the preceding 50 years.

Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated the two-time defending champion Steffi Graf in the final, 7–6(8–6), 3–6, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1989 French Open. This ended Graf's streak of major singles titles at five, and was the only loss she suffered at the majors in the 1989 season. Graf served for the championship at 5–3 in the third set, but lost the game to love and won only three more points from that point. Sánchez Vicario was just 17 years old at the time, and it was the first of her three French Open titles.

Martina Navratilova defeated Zina Garrison in the final, 6–4, 6–1 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1990 Wimbledon Championships. It was her ninth Wimbledon singles title and 18th and final major singles title overall, tying Chris Evert's Open Era record. It was also her ninth consecutive Wimbledon final.

Steffi Graf defeated Gabriela Sabatini in the final, 6–3, 3–6, 6–1 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1988 US Open. It was her first US Open title and fifth major title overall. With the win, she became the third woman to complete the Grand Slam, after Maureen Connolly and Margaret Court. Moreover, it was the fourth component of her Golden Slam, which remains the only calendar Golden Slam achieved in pedestrian tennis, and Graf completed the career Grand Slam with the win.
