Yevgeny Kafelnikov defeated Michael Stich in the final, 7–6(7–4), 7–5, 7–6(7–4) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1996 French Open. It was his first major singles title.
Defending champion Sergi Bruguera defeated Alberto Berasategui in the final, 6–3, 7–5, 2–6, 6–1 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1994 French Open. It was his second and last major singles title. It was the first all-Spanish men's singles final at the French Open.

There, Sampras had a stomach bug and vomited during the fifth set, prompting a warning from the referee for delaying the match. He eventually won the fifth set in a tiebreak, 7–6(9–7).
Patrick Rafter defeated Greg Rusedski in the final, 6–3, 6–2, 4–6, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1997 US Open. It was his first major singles title. Rafter became the first Australian to win the title since John Newcombe in 1973. It was Rusedski's first major final, which he dedicated in honor of Diana, Princess of Wales, who had died a week earlier.

The draw comprised 32 players and eight were seeded. First-seeded Pete Sampras was the defending champion and regained his singles title, defeating unseeded Cédric Pioline, in the final, 6–4, 6–2.
Karel Nováček was the defending champion but chose to compete in Hilversum at the same week, winning the tournament.
