The 1997 Chicago Marathon was the 20th running of the annual marathon race in Chicago, United States and was held on October 19. The elite men's race was won by Morocco's Khalid Khannouchi in a time of 2:07:10 hours and the women's race was won by Great Britain's Marian Sutton in 2:29:03.

She was the bronze medalist at the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships.

The men's race was won by Kenya's Moses Mosop in a time of 2:05:37 hours – a course record. Ejegayehu Dibaba, making her marathon distance debut, was the women's winner in 2:22:09. Some 37,400 runners started the event and the final total of 35,670 finishers was the second highest in its history.

Kosgei was the marathon world record holder for women running in a mixed-sex race, with a time of 2:14:04 achieved on 13 October 2019 at the Chicago Marathon. The 2021 Chicago Marathon was held on October 10, 2021. It was the 43rd edition of the annual Chicago Marathon, and the first after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. The 2020 Chicago Marathon was canceled as a result of the pandemic. The race was the third of five World Marathon Majors scheduled for 2021; all the events in the series took place in the span of six weeks between late September and early November.

Benson Kipruto is a Kenyan long-distance runner. He won the 125th Boston Marathon in 2021 (2:09:51), the 2022 Chicago Marathon (2:04:24) and the 2024 Tokyo Marathon in a personal best of 2:02:16, where he also set a new course record. Kipruto finished third at both the 2022 and 2023 Boston Marathon with times of 2:07:27 and 2:06:06 respectively.
