The 1998 World Badminton Grand Prix was the 16th edition of the World Badminton Grand Prix finals. It was held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei from February 24 to February 28, 1999. It did not take place in December as in the years before due to the collision with the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. The prize money was USD300,000.
The players were qualified according to the ranking on 1 December 1998. In men's singles the first 16 players were qualified, in women's singles the first 12 and in the doubles the first eight. Margit Borg, the number 13 in the women's singles rank, could participate because the Susi Susanti was pregnant.

Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital city of Brunei. It is officially a municipal area with an area of 100.36 square kilometres (38.75 sq mi) and an estimated population of 100,700 as of 2007. It is part of Brunei-Muara District, the smallest yet most populous district which is home to over 70 per cent of the country's population. It is the country's largest urban centre and nominally the country's only city. The capital is home to Brunei's seat of government, as well as a commercial and cultural centre. It was formerly known as Brunei Town until it was renamed in 1970 in honour of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei and the father of the current Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.
Taufik Hidayat is an Indonesian retired badminton player. He is a former World, Olympic, two time Asian Games, and three time Asian champion, and the youngest world number one in the men's singles. Hidayat has won the Indonesia Open six times. He is considered to be one of the great men's single players in badminton history and has the nickname "Mr.Backhand".

Ha Jung-eun is a women's and mixed doubles badminton player from South Korea. Ha was competed at the 2006, 2010 Asian Games, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. Together with the Korean national women's team, they won the Uber Cup in 2010. At the same year, she won the bronze medal at the World Championships in the mixed doubles event.
Michelle Li is a Canadian professional badminton player from Markham, Ontario. Li is the 2014 Commonwealth Games champion and the first Canadian to win an individual gold medal in women's singles badminton at the Commonwealth Games. She has won gold in both singles and doubles at the Pan American Games and won the singles and team event titles from the Pan American Badminton Championships. As a competitor for Ontario, Li also won singles, doubles, and mixed team titles at the 2011 Canada Winter Games.
Sung Ji-hyun is a South Korean badminton player from Seoul. She is an Asian Championship gold medalist, a two-time Summer Universiade gold medalist, and a World Championship bronze medalist. She was also part of South Korean teams that won the 2010 Uber Cup, 2017 Sudirman Cup, as well the team event at the 2013 and 2015 Summer Universiade. She competed at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Asian Games, and at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. Sung is married to compatriot men's singles player, Son Wan-ho.
Chloe Noelle Magee is an Irish professional badminton player. She represented her country at the Olympic Games for three consecutive times in 2008 Beijing, 2012 London, and 2016 Rio de Janeiro. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, she became the first Irish woman to win a badminton match at the Olympics. She has been described as "the poster girl for Irish badminton". Together with her brother Sam Magee, she clinched a bronze medal at the 2017 European Championships, became Ireland's first medal at the European Badminton Championship. The duo also captured the bronze medals at the 2015 and 2019 European Games.

He Bingjiao is a Chinese professional badminton player. She began to receive intensive badminton training at the Suzhou Junior Sports School, when she was 7 years old. Five years later, she was sent to study in Nanjing and for tougher training there. The junior already competed in the senior level, and made her senior international debut at the 2013 Vietnam Open. In 2014, she competed at the Summer Youth Olympics, winning a gold medal in the girls' singles and a bronze in the mixed doubles event. She also won bronze medals at the World Championships in 2018 and 2021.
Pornpawee Chochuwong is a Thai professional badminton player. She was the girls' singles silver medalist at the 2015 Asian and 2016 World Junior Championships. She was also part of the Thai winning teams at the 2017, 2019 and 2021 SEA Games. Chochuwong won her first World Tour title at the 2020 Spain Masters by beating the reigning Olympic champion Carolina Marín in the final.
Karolina Ericsson is a retired Swedish badminton player. She represented her country in the World Championships in the years 1997 and 1999. Ericsson also qualified to compete at the 1998 World Grand Prix Finals in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.
