The 1999 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup was the ninth edition of field hockey tournament the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Pakistan won their maiden title defeating South Korea 3-1 in the final after having finished runner-ups in four out of their last eight appearances. Sohail Abbas was the competition's top scorer with 12 goals.

The Pakistan national field hockey team represents Pakistan in international field hockey. Having played its first match in 1948, it is administered by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), the governing body for hockey in Pakistan. It has been a member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) since 1948 and was founding member of the Asian Hockey Federation (ASHF), which was formed in 1958. The 2010 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup was the 19th edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, held between 6–16 May 2010. Due to bad weather, the final between India and Korea was abandoned after 6 minutes and 14 seconds of play. After discussions and consultations between the Tournament Director Paul Richards, the Organising Committee, with the consent of Sultan Azlan Shah, decided that India and Korea would be joint champions for the 19th edition of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. It was the 5th title for India and the 2nd for Korea.

The 2013 Men's Hockey Asia Cup was the ninth edition of the Men's Hockey Asia Cup, the quadrennial international men's field hockey championship of Asia organized by the Asian Hockey Federation. It was held from 24 August to 1 September 2013 in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. The winner of this tournament qualified for the 2014 World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands.
