The 2002 BNP Paribas Masters was a men's tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts. It was the 30th edition of the Paris Masters and was part of the Tennis Masters Series of the 2002 ATP Tour. It took place at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris in France from 28 October through 3 November 2002.
The singles draw was headlined by ATP No. 1, San Jose, Indian Wells, Queen's, Wimbledon champion and Cincinnati finalist Lleyton Hewitt, Scottsdale, Miami, Rome and Los Angeles winner Andre Agassi and Australian Open, Hamburg runner-up and 2000 Paris champion Marat Safin. Other top seeds were Hong Kong and Monte Carlo winner Juan Carlos Ferrero, Madrid finalist Jiří Novák, Tim Henman, Sébastien Grosjean and Roger Federer.

Fabrice Vetea Santoro is a retired French tennis player from Tahiti. Successful in both singles and doubles, he had an unusually long professional career, with many of his accomplishments coming toward the end of his career, and he is popular among spectators and other players alike for his winning demeanor and shot-making abilities; he is also one of a rare breed of player who plays two-handed on both the forehand and backhand sides.
Marat Safin defeated Lleyton Hewitt in the final, 1–6, 6–3, 6–4, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2005 Australian Open. It was his second and last major title, having also won the 2000 US Open. Hewitt was the first Australian to reach the final since Pat Cash in 1988.

It was his fourth Australian Open title, and his eighth and last major title overall. With the win, Agassi claimed his 21st consecutive match win at the Australian Open, as he won the title in 2000 and 2001.
