Roger Federer defeated Lleyton Hewitt in the final, 6–0, 7–6(7–3), 6–0 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2004 US Open. It was his first US Open title and his fourth major title overall. With the win, he became the tenth man to win three majors in a calendar year.

Rafael Nadal defeated Mariano Puerta in the final, 6–7(6–8), 6–3, 6–1, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2005 French Open. It was his first major title, the first of a record 14 French Open titles, and the first of a record 22 major men's singles titles overall. Gaudio came back from two sets down, saved two championship points, and twice broke Coria's serve when the latter served for the championship.
