The 2006 Mnet KM Music Festival (MKMF) was the eighth of the annual music awards in Seoul, South Korea that took place on November 25, 2006, at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena.

Contents

Leading the nominees were boy bands TVXQ and SG Wannabe, and solo artist Rain with five nominations each. The boy bands secured two wins each by the end of the ceremony, while the latter received only one award out of 5 nominations.

Background

The award ceremony was held for the eighth consecutive time. [1] Starting this year, however, three grand prizes (or daesang) were introduced including Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year awards. The event took place at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena once again with Shin Dong-yup as a returning host and Kim Ok-bin as his co-host. [2]

Shinhwa is a South Korean six-member boy band based in Seoul, composed of Eric Mun, Lee Min-woo, Kim Dong-wan, Shin Hye-sung, Jun Jin, and Andy Lee. Launched by SM Entertainment on March 24, 1998, the group signed with Good Entertainment in 2004 before creating their Shinhwa Company to manage their career as a band. Their next two albums, The 3rd Masterpiece (2006) and The Sentimental Chord (2007) were also commercial and critical successes.

The MAMA Award for Song of the Year is an honor presented at the annual MAMA Awards, a South Korean awards ceremony presented by Mnet. The Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Music Video is an award presented annually by CJ E&M (Mnet) at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.
