The 2006 Speedway World Cup Qualification (SWC) were two motorcycle speedway events used to determine the two national teams who qualify for the 2006 Speedway World Cup. According to the FIM rules the top six nations (Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Great Britain, Australia and Czech Republic) from the 2005 Speedway World Cup were automatically qualified.
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines which use only one gear and have no brakes; racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock. Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track the motorcycles reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour (110 km/h).
The 2006 Speedway World Cup (SWC) was the 6th FIM Speedway World Cup season. The Final took place on 22 July 2006 in the Smallmead Stadium in Reading, Berkshire, Great Britain. The tournament was won by Denmark and they beat Sweden, host team Great Britain and Australia in the Final. The defending champion Poland did not qualified to the Final.
The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme is the global governing/sanctioning body of motorcycle racing. It represents 113 national motorcycle federations that are divided into six regional continental unions.
