The 2007 UAB Blazers football team represented the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in the 2007 NCAA Division I FBS football season, and was the 17th team fielded by the school. The Blazers were led by first-year head coach Neil Callaway and played their home games at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, and competed as a member of Conference USA. The Blazers finished their twelfth season at the NCAA I-A/FBS level and their ninth affiliated with a conference with a record of 2–10 (1–7 C-USA).

In the first game of the Neil Callaway era, the Blazers would make their first-ever trip to the state of Michigan in this 55–18 defeat by the Spartans. The Blazers would fall behind 42–0 before Swayze Waters hit a 35-yard field goal before the half. After a safety early in the third, Waters would hit a pair of long field goals (50 and 47 yards) and score the seasons' first touchdown on a 15-yard Joseph Webb reception from Sam Hunt in the fourth. For the game, the Blazers were outgained on offense 593 to 226 total yards. [2]

On the road, the Blazers would take a 17–10 lead at the half only to give up 21 points in the third in this 34–24 defeat to the Seminoles. UAB would take the early lead on a 27-yard Swayze Waters field goal, and extend it to 10–0 on FSU's ensuing possession with Will Dunbar returning an interception 21-yards for the score. In the second, Sam Hunt would score on a 4-yard run to extend the lead to 17–3, before the Seminoles responded with a touchdown of their own in narrowing the lead to 17–10 at the half. Florida State would open the third with a pair of touchdowns to take a 24–17 lead, before UAB responded with a 16-yard Joseph Webb touchdown reception from Hunt to knot the game at 24. However, the Seminoles would close the game with 10 unanswered points to seal the 34–24 win. [3]

The first win of the Callaway era would come in the seasons first home game with a 22–0 victory over the FCS Braves of Alcorn State. Swayze Waters would star in hitting 5 field goals from 42, 32, 52, 22 and 38 yards respectively. The Blazers would visit the end zone only once on a 4-yard David Sigler touchdown reception from Sam Hunt in the second quarter. For the game, Waters set a team record for most field goals in a game, tied the team record for longest Blazer field goal (52 yards) and tied the conference record for most field goals in a game. The UAB Blazers football team represents the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in the sport of American football. The Blazers compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and American Athletic Conference. The team is led by head coach Trent Dilfer, who was named the program’s 7th head coach on November 30th, 2022. Home games were previously held at Legion Field in Birmingham from the 1991 season to the 2020 season. A new stadium, Protective Stadium, has been the home of the Blazers starting from the 2021 season. The new stadium's capacity is over 47,000.

The Tide was led by its new head coach Nick Saban, the former head coach of rival LSU. Despite a strong 6–2 start, they finished the season by losing four of their final five games. The team closed the regular season at 6–6 and lost for a sixth-straight time to rival Auburn. The Tide defeated Colorado in the 2007 Independence Bowl 30–24 to finish the season at a 7–6.

Colorado finished 6–7 after losing in the Independence Bowl to Alabama. 2007 was Colorado's first consecutive losing season in 22 years, but represented a vast improvement over the team's 2–10 mark in 2006.

The 2004 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, part of the 2004 bowl game season, took place on Christmas Eve 2004, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. The competing teams were the UAB Blazers, representing Conference USA (C-USA) and the Hawaii Warriors, representing the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Hawaii won the game, 59–40. This was the third Hawaii Bowl, and was sponsored by Sheraton Hotels and Resorts.

Swayze Waters is a gridiron football placekicker and punter who is currently a free agent. He was most recently a member of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was signed by the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL) as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He played college football at UAB. He has also been a member of the Oakland Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, Edmonton Eskimos, Carolina Panthers, and BC Lions.

Joseph Webb III is a former American football quarterback. He also played as a kick returner. After playing college football for the UAB Blazers, Webb was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft as a quarterback. He has also played for the Carolina Panthers, the Buffalo Bills, and the Houston Texans. Webb holds the NFL record for most tackles by a quarterback with 21.

The game had significant postseason implications, with both teams ranked in the top 5 and a berth to the SEC Championship Game and potentially, the National Championship game, at stake.

The eighth annual Bahamas Bowl, the game featured the UAB Blazers, from Conference USA, and the Miami RedHawks, from the Mid-American Conference. The game began at 11:35 a.m. EST and aired on ESPN. It was the first of the 2022–23 bowl games concluding the 2022 FBS football season. Sponsored by mortgage lender HomeTown Lenders, it was officially known as the HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl.
