Banda Calypso was a Brazilian brega pop band, with influences of regional rhythms of the state of Pará. The band was formed in Belém, the state capital, in 1999 by singer/dancer Joelma da Silva Mendes and guitarist/producer Cledivan Almeida Farias, better known as Mestre Ximbinha. Early exposure of their work was restricted to only the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. The 10th Annual Latin Grammy Awards took place on Thursday, November 5, 2009, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was the second time the show took place in Las Vegas. Juan Gabriel was honored as the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year on November 4, the day prior to the telecast. Calle 13 were the big winners, winning five awards including Album of the Year. 2009 marked the tenth anniversary of the Latin Grammy Awards.
Sandy Leah Lima, known mononymously as Sandy, is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and actress. Born and raised in Campinas, Sandy began her career in 1989, when she formed with her brother, musician Junior Lima, the vocal duo Sandy & Junior. They rose to fame in the early 1990s as child stars and reached the height of their success during teenage, as albums Era Uma Vez... Ao Vivo (1998), As Quatro Estações (1999), Quatro Estações: O Show (2000) and Sandy & Junior (2001) sold more than a million units, with the second and third being among the best-selling albums of all time in Brazil. The duo were credited with leading a wave of teen pop artists during the late 1990s and early 2000s, with the press labelling Sandy the Brazilian "Princess of Pop". The duo disbanded in 2007 and released their Acústico MTV in September that year. In addition to their success in the music industry, the sibling's name became a strong brand, with more than 300 licensed products which made R$300 million a year.
The 2009 MTV Video Music Brazil was hosted by Marcelo Adnet and took place at the Credicard Hall. It awarded the best in Brazilian music, popular culture and internet culture in the year of 2009. Despite being a Brazilian awards show, the 2009 VMB included live performances by American rapper Ja Rule and Scottish rock band Franz Ferdinand, who were also nominated in the Best International Act category. The 2009 VMB had over 20 categories, the largest number in the history of the show; therefore, part of the awards were delivered in a special show named "VMB Antes", presented some hours before the main event, including small performances by the 2009 VMB Dream Band winners and winners in other categories.

In 2005, the Viewer's Choice and Video of the Year categories were combined into a single category; before 2005, the Video of the Year award was chosen by a jury of experts, while most of the categories were decided by the viewers.

It awarded the best in Brazilian music, popular culture and internet culture in the year of 2010. The most notable moments in the show were the 5 awards received by pop band Restart, including for Best New Act and Act of the Year, this last sounded by boos from the audience. There was also a live performance by American alternative rock band OK Go, the appearance of electropop duo 3OH!3, Mexican singer Christian Chávez and Paraguayan model Larissa Riquelme, among many Brazilian personalities.
