The 2008 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team trials were held from June 19 to 22, 2008, at the Wachovia Center (now known as Wells Fargo Center) in Philadelphia. [1]

Venue

The Wachovia Center, which has a capacity of up to 20,478 spectators, is home to the Philadelphia Flyers, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Philadelphia Wings.

Olympic team selection

At the conclusion of the Olympic trials only Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin were named to the team to represent the USA at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The remaining members of the team were to be determined after a selection camp; attendees included: Jana Bieger, Chelsea Davis, Ivana Hong, Mattie Larson, Corrie Lothrop, Chellsie Memmel, Samantha Peszek, Alicia Sacramone, Bridget Sloan, and Shayla Worley. [9] The camp concluded in mid-July with Memmel, Peszek, Sacramone, and Sloan being named to the team while Bieger, Hong, and Lothrop were named as the alternates. [10]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nastia Liukin</span> Russian-American 2008 Olympic champion

Anastasia "Nastia" Valeryevna Liukin is an American former artistic gymnast. She is the 2008 Olympic all-around champion, a five-time Olympic medalist, the 2005 and 2007 World champion on the balance beam, and the 2005 World champion on the uneven bars. She is also a four-time all-around U.S. national champion, winning twice as a junior and twice as a senior. With nine World Championships medals, seven of them individual, Liukin is tied with Shannon Miller for the third-highest tally of World Championship medals among U.S. gymnasts. Liukin also tied Miller's record as the American gymnast having won the most medals in a single non-boycotted Olympic Games. In October 2011, Liukin announced that she was returning to gymnastics with the hopes of making a second Olympic team. Liukin did not make the 2012 Olympic team and retired from the sport on July 2, 2012.

Valeri Viktorovich Liukin is a Kazakh-American retired artistic gymnast currently working as a gymnastics coach. Representing the former Soviet Union, Liukin was the 1988 Olympic champion in the team competition and individually on the horizontal bar, and Olympic silver medalist in the all-around and the parallel bars.

Natasha Kelley is a former American artistic gymnast. Kelley was a member of the silver-medal-winning U.S. team at the 2006 World Championships, along with Chellsie Memmel, Alicia Sacramone, Jana Bieger, Nastia Liukin, and Ashley Priess.

She was a member of the gold medal American team at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and the all-around bronze medalist at the 2007 Pan American Games. Hong was named an alternate to the 2008 U.S. Olympic team and was a member of the U.S. Women's Team in the 2009 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in London.

Shawn Johnson East is an American former artistic gymnast. She is the 2008 Olympic balance beam gold medalist and team, all-around and floor exercise silver medalist. Johnson is also the 2007 all-around World Champion, and a five-time Pan American Games gold medalist, winning the team titles in 2007 and 2011, as well as titles in the all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam in 2007.

Alicia Marie Sacramone Quinn is a retired American artistic gymnast. She won a silver medal with the United States team at the 2008 Summer Olympics and is the 2005 World Champion on floor exercise and the 2010 World Champion on the vault. With a total of eleven World Championship and Olympic medals, Sacramone is the fourth most decorated U.S. female gymnast, behind Simone Biles (30), Shannon Miller (16), and Nastia Liukin (14).

The Tour of Gymnastics Superstars was a 2008 nationwide concert tour featuring 17 American gymnasts plus recording artists Jordan Pruitt, Carly Patterson, and KSM. The tour visited 34 cities in more than 20 U.S. states.

The 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships were held in Tokyo, Japan, from October 7–16, 2011, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The 2012 Visa U.S. National Gymnastics Championships was the 49th edition of the U.S. National Gymnastics Championships. The competition was held from June 7–10, 2012 at the Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Missouri.

The 2011 Visa U.S. National Gymnastics Championships was the 48th edition of the U.S. National Gymnastics Championships. The competition was held from August 17–20, 2011 at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
