Career
Bieger competed at her first U.S. National Championships in 2003, placing third on the vault in the junior division.
At the National Championships in 2004, she won a bronze medal in the all-around in the junior division and won the vault title, earning her first national team berth. The same year, she made her international debut, competing with the American junior team at the 2004 Pacific Alliance Championships and winning four medals: gold in the team event and vault final, and silver on the balance beam and in the all-around, behind teammate Nastia Liukin.
Bieger made her senior debut in 2005, placing third in the all-around, on vault, and on floor exercise at the National Championships. At the 2005 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, she turned in a strong performances on the uneven bars (injury prevented her from competing on more than one apparatus) but was shut out of the finals because only two gymnasts from each country may participate in each event final. She was also a member of the American squad at the 2005 Pan American Games, where she placed first with the team and earned individual silver and bronze medals on the vault and floor exercise.
At the 2006 Cottbus Cup, part of the prestigious World Cup circuit, Bieger won gold on vault, silver on beam, and bronze on bars. At the 2006 Pacific Alliance Championships, she won gold in the team, vault, and floor exercise finals.
At the National Championships in August, she finished third in the all-around, maintaining her previous year's ranking. She also placed in the top six on all four events, winning a silver medal on the vault and a bronze on beam. In October, Bieger was a member of the silver medal-winning U.S. team at the World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. She fell on vault during team finals but earned scores over 15.000 on the other three events, and later won the silver medal in the all-around. This result was controversial, in part because the gold medalist, Vanessa Ferrari of Italy, won despite a fall on the balance beam. Additionally, Ferrari and Bruno Grandi, the president of the International Federation of Gymnastics are both from Italy, which raised questions about the impartiality of the judging. Both gymnastics fans and officials from other countries, including the head of the Romanian team, Nicolae Forminte, publicly objected to the scoring and the final results. USA Gymnastics did not take an official stance.
After the all-around, Bieger competed in the floor exercise event final, where she won her third silver medal of the World Championships behind Cheng Fei of China. She also participated in the uneven bars final, replacing her injured teammate Chellsie Memmel, and finished in fifth place.
She sustained an ankle injury in early 2007 at the American Cup that took her out of competition for a while. She competed at the 2007 U.S. Nationals despite a lack of training, but did not do well and was not chosen for the World Championships team. She was scheduled to compete at the 2007 Cottbus Cup, but the U.S. national team coordinator, Márta Károlyi, pulled her from the meet, saying she was not prepared for international competition.
Bieger returned to international competition in 2008 at a small meet, competing on all events but floor. She went on to compete at the 2008 Pacific Rim Championships, where she won silver in the all-around and gold on the uneven bars.
After the 2008 Olympic Trials and selection camp, Bieger was named as an alternate to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Although two gymnasts on the squad were injured, she was not allowed to compete. She expressed disappointment about the experience but continued to compete in 2009, making appearances at the CoverGirl Classic in July and the Visa National Championships in August. She made it to the final round of the team selection camp for the World Championships in October but was not chosen. Instead, she received a berth to the Croatia World Cup in November, alongside teammate Kytra Hunter.
Yelena Lvovna Shushunova was a Soviet Russian gymnast. Shushunova was one of five women who have won all-around titles at all major competitions: Olympics, World Championships and European/Continental Championships and one of eleven women who medaled on every event at World Championships. Shushunova was renowned for pioneering complex skills as well as her explosive and dynamic tumbling and high consistency.
Elena Mikhailovna Zamolodchikova is a Russian former artistic gymnast and four-time Olympic medallist. She is the 2000 Olympic champion on vault and floor exercise, and she is a two-time World champion on vault. She also competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics where she won a bronze medal with the Russian team. She is a two-time World Cup Final vault champion and a two-time European champion with the Russian team. In 2015, she was inducted in the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
Daria "Dasha" Joura is a retired Australian gymnast. She is a triple Australian senior all-around champion and competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in 2006 and 2007.
Natasha Kelley is a former American artistic gymnast. Kelley was a member of the silver-medal-winning U.S. team at the 2006 World Championships, along with Chellsie Memmel, Alicia Sacramone, Jana Bieger, Nastia Liukin, and Ashley Priess.
Lauren Stephanie Mitchell is an Australian former artistic gymnast. She is the 2010 World champion on the floor exercise and the 2009 World Championships silver medalist on the balance beam and floor exercise. Mitchell is only the second Australian female gymnast to win a medal at the World Championships, and she is the first to win a gold medal. She is the 2010 Commonwealth Games champion in the all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam, and with the Australian team, and she is the 2008 World Cup Final balance beam champion. She also represented Australia at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
Elsabeth Ann Black is a Canadian artistic gymnast. She is a four-time Olympian, having represented her country at the 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic games. She is the 2017 World all-around silver medallist, making her the first Canadian gymnast to win a world all-around medal, and she led the Canadian women's gymnastics team to a bronze medal in the 2022 World Championships team final, the first world team medal won by a Canadian gymnastics team. She won a silver medal on the balance beam at the 2022 World Championships. She is also the 2018 Commonwealth Games all-around champion, a two-time Pan American Games all-around champion, and a six-time Canadian national all-around champion. At the 2020 Olympic Games, Black placed fourth in the balance beam final, the highest placement in the Olympics for a female Canadian gymnast.
Giulia Steingruber is a Swiss retired artistic gymnast. She is the 2016 Olympic and 2017 World bronze medalist on vault. Additionally, she is the 2015 European all-around champion, a four-time European vault champion and the 2016 European floor exercise champion.
Kim Bui is a retired German artistic gymnast. She represented Germany at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic Games. She is the 2009 and 2014 German National Champion and the 2011 European bronze medalist on the uneven bars. In her final competition, she was part of the first German team to win a European team medal.
Valeria Vladimirovna Maksyuta is a former artistic gymnast who represented Ukraine for several years before immigrating to Israel in 2007.
Angelina Romanovna Melnikova is a Russian artistic gymnast. With eleven Olympic and World medals, she is the joint third-most decorated Russian gymnast of all time. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she led the Russian Olympic Committee to gold in the team competition. She previously represented Russia at the 2016 Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal in the team competition. She was also a member of the gold medal-winning Russian teams at the 2016 and 2018 European Championships, and the silver medal-winning Russian teams at the 2018 and 2019 World Championships.
Seda Gurgenovna Tutkhalyan is a Russian artistic gymnast. She is the 2014 Youth Olympic Games Individual All-around champion and a 2016 Summer Olympics Team silver medalist.
Elena Vyacheslavovna Eremina is a retired Russian artistic gymnast. She is the 2017 World all-around bronze medalist and the 2016 European junior all-around champion.
Rebeca Rodrigues de Andrade is a Brazilian artistic gymnast. Having won a total of six Olympic and nine World medals, she is the most decorated Brazilian and Latin American gymnast of all time, as well as the most decorated Brazilian Olympian in any discipline. In the all-around, she is the 2022 World champion, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, the 2023 World silver medalist, and the 2021 Pan American champion. On vault, she is the 2020 Olympic gold medalist, the 2024 Olympic silver medalist, a two-time World Champion, and the 2023 Pan American Games champion. In the floor exercise, she is the 2024 Olympic gold medalist, 2023 World silver medallist, and 2022 World bronze medallist. She led the Brazilian team to its first ever team medals at the 2023 World Championships (silver) and the 2024 Olympics (bronze), as well as the gold medal at the 2021 Pan American Championships.
Denisa Golgotă is a retired Romanian artistic gymnast. She won two medals at the 2018 European Championships – a silver on floor exercise and a bronze on vault.
Georgia Godwin is an Australian artistic gymnast. She is the 2022 Commonwealth Games all-around and vault champion and the team, uneven bars and balance beam silver-medalist. She is also the 2018 Commonwealth Games all-around silver medalist and the team and uneven bars bronze medalist. She represented Australia at the 2020 Summer Olympics and was the third reserve for the all-around final. She is also a two-time World Cup silver medalist.
Emma Kathryn Mary Spence is a Canadian artistic gymnast. She represented Canada at the 2022 World Championships and won a bronze in the team event, their first team medal. She won bronze with the team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Individually she is the 2018 Youth Olympic bronze medallist on vault as well as the 2022 Commonwealth Games all-around and balance beam bronze medalist.
Vladislava Sergeyevna Urazova is a Russian artistic gymnast. She represented the Russian Olympic Committee at the 2020 Summer Olympics and won the gold medal in the team event. She was a member of the team who won gold at the inaugural Junior World Championships. Individually she is the 2019 Junior World Champion and 2021 European silver medalist on the uneven bars.
Viktoria Viktorovna Listunova is a Russian artistic gymnast. She represented the Russian Olympic Committee at the 2020 Summer Olympics and won the gold medal in the team event. She was a member of the team that won gold at the inaugural Junior World Championships. Individually, she is the 2019 Junior World all-around and floor exercise champion, the 2021 European all-around champion, and the 2021, 2022, and 2023 Russian National Champion.
Shilese Jones is an American artistic gymnast. She was a member of the teams that won gold at the 2022 World Championships, 2023 World Championships, and the 2018 Pan American Championships. Individually she is the 2022 World all-around and uneven bars silver medalist and the 2023 World all-around and uneven bars bronze medalist. Jones is also a two-time U.S. National Champion on uneven bars (2022–2023) and the 2022 U.S. National Champion on floor exercise. She currently trains with Ascend Gymnastics.
Jana Hani Ismail Mahmoud is an Egyptian artistic gymnast. She won the all-around title at the 2024 African Championships and qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games. She is a two-time African champion on the floor exercise and is the 2022 African vault champion. She helped the Egyptian team win the team titles at the 2022 and 2024 African Championships. She represented Egypt at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
