It was their second US Open title together and tenth major title together overall. It was the second component in an eventual non-calendar-year Grand Slam for the sisters.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams were the defending champions. However, Serena withdrew from the tournament because of a foot injury and Venus chose to participate in the singles event only. Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova defeated Liezel Huber and Nadia Petrova 2–6, 6–4, 7–6(7–4) in the final. This match was played over two days due to heavy rainfall on September 12.
Petra Kvitová defeated Maria Sharapova in the final, 6–3, 6–4 to win the ladies' singles title at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first major title. Kvitová became the first player born in the 1990s of either gender to win a major, the first Czech to win the title since Jana Novotná in 1998, and the first left-hander to win the title since Martina Navratilova in 1990.
Li Na was the defending champion, but lost the final against Victoria Azarenka, 6–2, 1–6, 6–3.
Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko were the defending champions but Azarenka chose not to participate in doubles this year.
Kirilenko played with Nadia Petrova but lost in the semifinals to eventual champions Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. Vinci and Errani won the title after defeating Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the final by 6–1, 3–6, [10–4] to win their first ever WTA tier I tournament.
Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká were the defending champions, but lost in the semifinals to Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova.
María José Martínez Sánchez was the defending champion, but lost to Ekaterina Makarova in the quarterfinals.
Caroline Wozniacki won the title, defeating Kaia Kanepi in the final, 6–1, 6–0. This was the first title in 13 months for the former World No. 1 and her first of 2012.
Květa Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik were the defending champions, but decided not to play together. Peschke partnered with Anna-Lena Grönefeld, but lost in the quarterfinals to Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova. Srebotnik played alongside Zheng Jie, but lost in the semifinals to Nuria Llagostera Vives and Sania Mirza.
Third seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won the title, defeating Llagostera Vives and Mirza in the final by the score of 7–5, 7–5.
Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova were the defending champions, but King decided not to participate. Shvedova played alongside Katarina Srebotnik, but they lost in the semifinals to Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
Makarova and Vesnina won the final 6–3, 1–6, [10–8] against Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova.

Russian pair Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva were the defending champions, but Zvonareva decided not to participate due to injury. Kuznetsova partnered up with Yanina Wickmayer but they lost in the second round to Nuria Llagostera Vives and Zheng Jie.
Maria Sharapova defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the final, 6–2, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2013 Indian Wells Masters. It was her second Indian Wells Masters title.
Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova in the final, 4–6, 6–3, 6–0 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2013 Miami Open. It was her record sixth Miami Open title, and Sharapova's fifth runner-up finish without winning the title.
Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova were the defending champions, but Kirilenko chose not to compete this year.
Petrova teamed with Katarina Srebotnik and successfully defended the title, defeating Lisa Raymond and Laura Robson in the final 6–1, 7–6(7–2).
