[2] It was the 37th edition of the event known that year as the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships, and was part of the 500 Series of the 2010 ATP World Tour. It was held at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan, from October 4 through October 11, 2010. [1] First-seeded Rafael Nadal won the singles title.

The 2010 Rafael Nadal tennis season is lauded as one of the greatest seasons of all time. Nadal himself also called it his best year. In the 2010 season, Nadal became the first male player in tennis history to win Grand Slam tournaments on three different surfaces in the same year, referred to as a Surface Slam. He became the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the French-Wimbledon-US triplet in a calendar year, being the fourth in history. At 24 years, 3 months and 10 days, after his win at the US Open, he simultaneously became the youngest player in the Open Era to complete both the Career Grand Slam, and the Career Golden Slam. With this achievement, he was the second man in history to complete the Career Golden Slam in singles, after Andre Agassi did so in 1996. He also became the second man to win at least two majors on three different surfaces in his career. Nadal further cemented his place in history by becoming the first, and only player to-date, to win Monte-Carlo Masters, Madrid Masters, Rome Masters, and the French Open in a calendar year, a feat known as the Clay Slam.

Rafael Nadal defeated the defending champion Novak Djokovic in the final, 7–5, 1–6, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2021 Italian Open. It was his record-extending tenth Italian Open title and record-equaling 36th and final Masters 1000 title overall. Nadal saved two match points en route to the title, in his third round match against Denis Shapovalov. This marked the fourth tournament that Nadal had won on 10 or more occasions, making him the only tennis player to do so.

Two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic defeated Matteo Berrettini in the final, 6–7(4–7), 6–4, 6–4, 6–3 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. It was the 47th edition of the Japan Open, and part of the ATP Tour 500 series of the 2022 ATP Tour. It was held at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan, from 3–9 October 2022. It was the first event since 2019, with the 2020 and 2021 events cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Third-seeded Taylor Fritz won the singles title.
