The 2011 Consadole Sapporo season was Consadole Sapporo's fourteenth season in the J. League system and 27th overall in the second tier. Consadole Sapporo won promotion to the 2012 J.League Division 1 and was knocked out of the Emperor's Cup in the second round.
The 2012 J.League Division 1 season was the 47th season of Japanese top-flight football and 20th since the establishment of the J.League. The season started on March 10 and finished on December 1.
The 91st Emperor's Cup (第91回天皇杯) was a regular edition of an annual Japanese national cup tournament. It started on 3 September 2011 and ended on 1 January 2012 with the final at National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, won by FC Tokyo 4–2 against Kyoto Sanga.

The 2011 J.League Division 2 season was the 40th season of the second-tier club football in Japan and the 13th season since the establishment of J2 League. The season began on March 5 and finished on December 3. Due to the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the season was put on hold from March 12 to April 23.
The 2011 F.C. Tokyo season was F.C. Tokyo's first season in J. League Division 2 since 1999. F.C. Tokyo won promotion back into the 2012 J. League Division 1, F.C. Tokyo also won the 2011 Emperor's Cup.
The 2012 Montedio Yamagata season sees Montedio Yamagata return to J.League Division 2 after being relegated in the 2011 J.League Division 1. This will be their 16th season overall in the second tier. Montedio Yamagata are also competing in the 2012 Emperor's Cup.
The 2012 FC Machida Zelvia season saw FC Machida Zelvia compete in J.League Division 2 for the first time after being promoted from the 2011 Japan Football League. Machida Zelvia were relegated back to the Japan Football League on the last day of the season after a 0-3 defeat to Shonan Bellmare. They are also competing in the 2012 Emperor's Cup.
The 2012 Matsumoto Yamaga FC season sees Matsumoto Yamaga compete in J.League Division 2 for the first time after being promoted from the 2011 Japan Football League. Matsumoto Yamaga are also competing in the 2012 Emperor's Cup.
The 2012 Avispa Fukuoka season sees Avispa Fukuoka return to J.League Division 2 after spending 2011 in J1. This is their non-consecutive 13th season in the second tier since 1991. Avispa Fukuoka are also competing in the 2012 Emperor's Cup.

This is their 36th non-consecutive season in the second tier of Japanese football, the longest number of seasons for a club in the division.
