The 2004 J.League Division 1 season was the 12th season of the J1 League. The league fixture began on March 13, 2004 and ended on December 11, 2004. The Suntory Championship 2004 took place on December 5 and December 11, 2004. The first ever J.League Promotion / relegation Series took place on December 4 and December 12, 2004.

The season was put on hold from March 12 to April 23 due to the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, therefore canceling a planned five-week summer break between June 27–July 29 in order to allow preparation of the Japanese national team for the 2011 Copa América.

The 2008 Nagoya Grampus season was Nagoya Grampus' 16th season in the J. League Division 1 and 27th overall in the Japanese top flight. They also participated in the 2008 J. League Cup, being knocked out at the Semifinal stage by Oita Trinita, and the 2008 Emperor's Cup getting knocked out at the Quarterfinal stage by Gamba Osaka.

It also includes the 2012 J.League Cup and the 2011 Emperor's Cup. 2012 is Sérgio Soares's first season at Cerezo after Levir Culpi left at the end of last season.
The 2012 Sagan Tosu season was Sagan Tosu's first season in J.League Division 1 after being promoted for J.League Division 2 in 2011. They finished the season in fifth position, narrowly missing out on an AFC Champions League spot by two points. They also participated in the J.League Cup, going out in the Group Stages, and the Emperor's Cup, where they reached the Second Round before defeat to Kamatamare Sanuki. It was their second season with Yoon Jung-hwan as their manager, and Yohei Toyoda was their top goalscorer with 16 league goals.
The 2013 Kashiwa Reysol season was Kashiwa Reysol's 3rd season back in the J.League Division 1 since promotion in 2010, making it their 41st season in the top flight overall. They finished 10th in the league, won the J.League Cup and were knocked out of the Emperor's Cup and AFC Champions League at the fourth round Semifinals respectively.

The 2015 FC Tokyo season was the club's 15th season and the fourth consecutive in the top division of Japanese football. It was Massimo Ficcadenti's second season as manager.
The 2016 seasonwas Kashima's 24th consecutive season in the J1 League, the top-division of professional football in Japan. In addition to the league campaign, the club also competed in the Emperor's Cup, League Cup, Super Cup, and Suruga Bank Championship.
The 2013 season was Kashima Antlers 10th season in the J1 League. They got to the 4th round of the Emperors Cup and the 1st round of the J.League Cup, and ended up finishing 5th in the league.
The 2020 Gamba Osaka season was Gamba Osaka's 27th season in the J1 League and 33rd overall in the Japanese top flight. It will see them compete in the 18 team J1 League as well as the J.League Cup and Emperor's Cup competitions.
The 2020 season is Cerezo Osaka's fourth consecutive season in the top-division of Japanese football following promotion in 2016. In addition to the J1 League, the club also competes in the 2020 Emperor's Cup and the 2020 J.League Cup.
