Roger Federer defeated Marcos Baghdatis in the final, 5–7, 7–5, 6–0, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2006 Australian Open. It was his second Australian Open title and his seventh major title overall. Baghdatis became the first Cypriot to reach a major final.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal successfully defended his title, defeating Roger Federer in the final, 1–6, 6–1, 6–4, 7–6(7–4), to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2006 French Open. It was Nadal's second French Open title and second major title overall. It was the first of three consecutive years Nadal and Federer would contest the French Open final. This marked Federer's first defeat in a major final; he had the chance to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four major titles at once, having won the preceding Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open titles. Defending champion Roger Federer successfully defended his title, defeating Ivan Ljubičić in the final, 7–6(7–5), 7–6(7–4), 7–6(8–6) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2006 Miami Open. Federer achieved his second Sunshine Double with the win.

Rafael Nadal defeated the five-time defending champion Roger Federer in the final, 6–4, 6–4, 6–7(5–7), 6–7(8–10), 9–7 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships. It was his fifth major title, and his first outside of the French Open. It was also the first time Federer lost a major final outside the French Open. The final marked the third of three consecutive Wimbledon finals contested by Federer and Nadal, with Federer emerging victorious in the two prior encounters. It was the second longest championship match in Wimbledon history with play lasting 4 hours and 48 minutes, and with two rain delays. The event stretched over seven hours ending just before nightfall, and is considered by many to be the greatest match in tennis history. This was also the last major for 2006 Wimbledon semifinalist and former world No. 4 Jonas Björkman, and the last Wimbledon appearance for 2004 Wimbledon semifinalist and former world No. 7 Mario Ančić.
