The 2012 Buffalo State Bengals football team represented Buffalo State College as a member of the Empire 8 during the 2012 NCAA Division III football season. They were led by 19th-year head coach Jerry Boyes and played their home games at Coyer Field. On September 15, Buffalo State went on the road and defeated the three-time defending NCAA Division III champions and top-ranked Wisconsin–Whitewater, 7–6, winning the game on a touchdown pass in the game's final seconds. [1] The victory by the Bengals snapped Wisconsin–Whitewater's 46-game winning streak, preventing the Warhawks from extending the streak to 47 games, which would have been the third-longest winning streak in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football history. The Wisconsin–Whitewater Warhawks football program is the intercollegiate American football team for the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The team competes in the NCAA Division III and are members of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Wisconsin–Whitewater's first football team was fielded in 1889. The team plays its home games at the 13,500 seat Perkins Stadium in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The Warhawks are coached by Kevin Bullis.

Lance Leipold is an American football coach who has been the head coach at the University of Kansas since 2021. Leipold served as the head football coach at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater (UWW) from 2007 to 2014 and at University at Buffalo from 2015 to 2020. During his tenure at UWW, the Wisconsin–Whitewater Warhawks won the NCAA Division III Football Championship in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014 and were runners-up in 2008. During his time at Wisconsin-Whitewater, Leipold led the Warhawks to 5 undefeated seasons.

Behrendt was a member of three NCAA Division III Football Championship-winning teams with the Wisconsin–Whitewater Warhawks football program, one as a backup in 2011 and two as the team's starting quarterback, in 2013 and 2014.

The 2016 Wisconsin–Whitewater Warhawks football team was an American football team that represented the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater as a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) during the 2016 NCAA Division III football season. Led by second-year head coach Kevin Bullis, the Warhawks compiled an overall record of 12–1 and a mark of 7–1 in conference play, winning the WIAC title. They advanced to the playoffs NCAA Division III Football Championship, losing in the quarterfinals to John Carroll.
