The 2012–13 California Golden Bears women's basketball team will represent University of California, Berkeley during the 2012–13 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Golden Bears, led by second-year head coach Lindsay Gottlieb, played their home games at the Haas Pavilion and were members of the Pac-12 Conference. They finished with a record of 324 overall, 171 in Pac-12 play to tie for the conference regular season title with Stanford. They lost in the semifinals of the 2013 Pac-12 Conference women's basketball tournament to UCLA. They were invited to the 2013 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament where they reached the first Final Four in program history.

The Pac-12 Conference is a collegiate athletic conference that operated in the Western United States. Its two members are located in the states of Oregon, and Washington. The conference consists of the Washington State Cougars and Oregon State Beavers. They are the only remaining members after several teams departed for the Big-12 Conference, Big Ten Conference, and Atlantic Coast Conference. The Pac-12 participates at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level for all sports, and its football teams competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the highest level of NCAA football competition.

Michael John Montgomery is a retired American basketball coach. He is best known for his 18-year tenure at Stanford (1986–2004), where he led the program to 12 NCAA Tournaments, including a Final Four appearance in 1998. Montgomery previously served as head coach at the Montana (1978–1986). Following his time at Stanford, he coached the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA) for two seasons (2004–2006) before ending his career at the University of California (2008–2014). He announced his retirement from coaching following the 2013–14 season.

The California Golden Bears are the athletic teams that represent the University of California, Berkeley. Referred to in athletic competition as California or Cal, the university fields 30 varsity athletic programs and various club teams in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)'s Division I primarily as a member of the Pac-12 Conference, and for a limited number of sports as a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Over the course of the school's history, California has won team national titles in 13 men's and 3 women's sports and 115 team titles overall. Cal athletes have also competed in the Olympics for a host of different countries. Notable facilities used by the Bears include California Memorial Stadium (football) and Haas Pavilion. Cal finished the 2010–11 athletic season with 1,219.50 points, earning third place in the Director's Cup standings, the Golden Bears' highest finish ever. Cal did not receive any points for its national championships in rugby and men's crew because those sports are not governed by the NCAA. Cal finished 12th in the 2014-15 standings.

The Pac-12 Conference men's basketball tournament, otherwise known as the Pac-12 tournament, was the annual concluding tournament for the NCAA college basketball in the Pac-12, taking place in Las Vegas at the T-Mobile Arena. The first tournament was held in 1987 for the Pac-10 conference. It ended after four seasons. The conference did not have a conference tournament until it was started again in 2002.

The Golden Bears finished the season 24–11, 13–5 in Pac-10 play to win the regular season conference championship, their first regular season title since the 1959–60 season. They lost to Washington in the finals of the Pac-10 tournament. They received an at–large bid to the 2010 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, earning an 8 seed in the South Region. They defeated 9 seed Louisville in the first round before falling to 1 seed and AP #3 Duke in the second round. The Blue Devils went on to claim their fourth national title.

They finished with a record of 24–10 overall, 13–5 in Pac-12 play. They lost in the semifinals of the 2012 Pac-12 Conference men's basketball tournament to Colorado. They earned a 12th seed at the 2012 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament which they lost in the First Four to South Florida.

The team began the season with a record of 0–12, the worst in history for any Power Five team. They finished the season 3–29, 2–18 in Pac-12 play to finish in last place. They lost to Washington State in the first round of the Pac-12 tournament.
