A bomb explosion known as the 2013 Bangalore bombing occurred on 17 April 2013 in Bangalore, India, at 10:30 (IST) near the Bharatiya Janata Party Karnataka New State Office Jagannath Bhawan, on Temple Street 11th Cross, Malleswaram.

Sixteen people were reported to have been injured. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) confirmed that the latest Bangalore blast was a terror attack. [1] Syed Ali and Jahan Aamir were arrested by the Bangalore Police for the attack. [2]

Event description and timeline

(Timeline displayed in reverse chronological order) A motorcycle was parked in between two cars near the BJP Karnataka State Office Jagannath Bhawan. The blast ripped apart the motorcycle and gutted both cars. Windows of nearby houses and vehicles were also reported to have been shattered due to the shock-wave from the blast.

17 April 2013 at 3:00 pm – Security was stepped up in New Delhi in the wake of the Bangalore blast with special checking of inbound and outbound vehicles. Personnel were deployed across the national capital but police said there was no reason to panic. Vigilance was also stepped up at railway stations, airports, Metro stations, market places and other public places in the capital.

17 April 2013 – 2:45 pm – Eleven policemen were reportedly injured in the blast, sources said.

17 April 2013 – 2:30 pm – Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde spoke on the Bangalore blast in Kolkata on Wednesday. He said he had already constituted a probe into the Bangalore blast.

17 April 2013 – 2:06 pm – An NSG team is set to leave for Bangalore.

17 April 2013 – 1:54 pm – Another blast was reported by the local media from Hebbal. Police, however, denied such reports.

17 April 2013 – 1:47 pm – NIA and sleuths were probing the blast site. Karnataka has been put on high alert.

17 April 2013 – 1:45 pm – Bangalore Police was alerted about possible disruptive activities a couple of days ago. On Tuesday, Bangalore hosted an IPL match and the security was expected to be high with elections around the corner.

17 April 2013 – 1:40 pm – BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi condemned the blast.

17 April 2013 – 1:38 pm – The Ind-Suzuki motorcycle in which the explosive (500 grams) was placed had a Tamil Nadu registration number and was parked there since yesterday, sources said. The explosion was carried out with a timer, it was learnt. The two-wheeler was a stolen one, reports said.

17 April 2013 – 1:36 pm – Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu condemned the incident and hoped that the center and the government of Karnataka probed the incident in proper coordination. He said they would wait for the outcome of the probe.

17 April 2013 – 1:15 pm – Reports confirmed that IED was used to trigger the Malleshwaram blast in Bangalore on Wednesday morning. 1:10 pm – R Ashoka, Karnataka deputy chief minister and home minister said the BJP will not be deterred by such cowardly acts. He said it was clearly an act of terror.

17 April 2013 – 1:05 pm – A female victim admitted in the hospital said she fell down after hearing a massive explosion and seeing fire. "I don't remember anything after that," she said. Meanwhile, officials said none of the vehicles that were present at that Bangalore blast site had a LPG kit. Karnataka Police DGP Lalrokhuma Pachau said the motorcycle and a van were damaged the most in the blast.

17 April 2013 – 12:44 pm – Home Secretary RPN Singh appealed for peace and calm. Police said the nature of the injuries in the blast were not very serious and the injured were undergoing treatment at KC Hospital. Singh said the Karnataka Police will be given all possible help in probing the incident.

17 April 2013 – 12:33 pm – Police were suspecting whether the blast targeted at the BJP office. The entire area has been cordoned off. The toll of injured touches 16.

17 April 2013 – 12:23 pm – The injured in the blast included a CRPF jawan and an 18-year-old PU student who was on her way to the tutorial. They were being treated at KC Hospital in Malleshwaram. Two teenage girls were among the injured.

17 April 2013 – 12:13 pm – An NIA team was rushed to the blast spot. Although initially it was said that the NIA's assistance would not be required to probe the case. A forensic team had also reached the spot to probe the incident. The bomb squad was also expected to arrive at the spot.

17 April 2013 – 12:09 pm – BJP spokesperson Ashwatnarayana said they had come out in the street after hearing a huge blast. "We had first thought it to be a transformer blast," he said. "Thanks to good old trees on Bevinamarada Raste the damage is minimal," the BJP man told OneIndia News. If the blast near BJP's office in Banglore is a terror attack, it will certainly help the BJP politically on the eve of election. BJP leader Balbir Punj had said earlier that he hoped that it was not a terror attack.

17 April 2013 – 11:45 am – Commissioner of Police Raghavendra Auradkar said the explosion was caused by a motorcycle bomb. The police said the explosives were placed on the motorcycle. The police, however, said there was no need to seek NIA help in the probe at the moment.

17 April 2013 – 11:30 am – Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said it was too early to make any statement on whether it was a terror attack. He said the officials were investigating it thoroughly.

Investigation

According to police chief of Karnataka, Lalrokhuma Pachau, the material that was used for explosion was ammonium nitrate which is easily available in the market and frequently used by terrorist groups [3] The motorbike used for the purpose was reported to have been stolen from Hyderabad while the number plate bearing Tamil Nadu registration number TN22R3769 was also recovered from the spot.

A team from the National Investigation Agency has arrived from Delhi to investigate into the matter. A team of the National Security Guard has also left for Bangalore to aid the police. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

So far no one has claimed responsibility for the bombings. [10]

On Friday, April 21, 2023, a special court in Bengaluru convicted two Tamil Nadu-based men, part of terror organisation, Al-Umma, for their role in an explosion outside a BJP office in the city in 2013.

Victims

16 people, 8 policemen and 8 civilians, are reported to have been injured in the blast. All the victims were rushed to KC General Hospital. According to director general of police (DGP) Lalrokhuma Pachau none of the victim suffered serious injuries. [11] The eight civilians include three women and two teenagers.

A number of vehicles and nearby houses also bore the brunt of the blast.

With State elections due in Karnataka on 5 May 2013, the BJP State HQ was busy with many visitors. The injured policemen were on security duty at close proximity to the BJP office.

The 1998 Coimbatore bombings occurred on Saturday, 14 February 1998, in the city of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 58 people were killed and over 200 injured in the 12 bomb attacks in 11 places, all within a 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) radius. The explosives used were found to be gelatin sticks activated by timer devices and were concealed in cars, motorcycles, bicycles, sideboxes of two-wheelers, denim and rexine bags, and fruit carts. Several bombs that failed to detonate were defused by bomb disposal squads of the Army, National Security Guards and Tamil Nadu Commando School. The bombings were apparently in retaliation to the 1997 Coimbatore riots during November – December the previous year, when Hindu fundamentalists groups killed 18 Muslims and 2 Hindus and looted several thousands of properties of Muslims following the murder of a traffic policeman named Selvaraj, by a member of the radical Islamist group Al Ummah. The main conspirator was found to be S A Basha, the founder of Al Ummah, an Islamic fundamentalist body. Investigators found out that the blasts were a part of larger conspiracy to target L.K.Advani, the leader of Bharatiya Janata Party on that day at 4 p.m in his election meeting.

The 2007 Samjhauta Express bombing was a terrorist attack that occurred around midnight on 18 February 2007 on the Samjhauta Express, a twice-weekly train service connecting Delhi, India, and Lahore, Pakistan. Bombs were set off in two carriages, both filled with passengers, just after the train passed Diwana near the Indian city of Panipat, 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of New Delhi. 70 people were killed in the ensuing fire and dozens more were injured. Of the 70 fatalities, most were Pakistani civilians. The victims also included some Indian civilians and three railway policemen.

The Mecca Masjid blast occurred on 18 May 2007 inside the Mecca Masjid, a mosque located in the old city area of Hyderabad, capital of the Indian state of Telangana located very close to Charminar. The blast was caused by a cellphone-triggered pipe bomb placed near the place where ablutions are performed. Two further live IEDs were found and defused by the police. Sixteen people were reported dead in the immediate aftermath, of whom five were killed by the police firing after the incident while trying to quell the mob.

2008 Bangalore serial blasts occurred on 25 July 2008 in Bangalore, India. A series of nine bombs exploded in which 1 person was killed and 20 injured. According to the Bangalore City Police, the blasts were caused by low-intensity crude bombs triggered by timers.

The 2008 Ahmedabad bombings were a series of 21 bomb blasts that hit Ahmedabad, India, on 26 July 2008, within a span of 70 minutes. Fifty-six people were killed and over 200 people were injured. Ahmedabad is the cultural and commercial heart of Gujarat state and a large part of western India. The blasts were considered to be of low intensity and were similar to the Bangalore blasts, Karnataka which occurred the day before. This bombings were done by Pakistani Islamic Terrorist group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami.

The 27 September 2008 Delhi bombing in India's second largest metropolis left three people dead and twenty-three more injured, on an infamous Saturday. The explosion occurred at 14:15, in Mehrauli's Electronic market called Sarai. Initially, there were reports of two persons, including a thirteen-year-old boy, named Santosh being killed in the attack. However, the next day the death toll rose to three. About 23 others were injured and were treated at AIIMS and Fortis Hospital. The bombing took place exactly two weeks after the five serial blasts in Delhi on 13 September 2008.

On 29 September 2008 three bombs exploded in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra of India killing 10 people and injuring 80. Two bombs went off in Malegaon, Maharashtra, which killed nine people while another blast in Modasa, Gujarat resulted in the death of one person.

The 2010 Pune bombing, also known as 13/7 and the German bakery blast, occurred on 13 February 2010 at approximately 19:15 Indian Standard Time, when a bomb exploded at a German bakery in the Indian city of Pune, Maharashtra. The blast killed 18 people, and injured at least 60 more, including an Italian woman, two Sudanese students and an Iranian student.

The 2011 Mumbai bombings, also known as 13/7, were a series of three coordinated bomb explosions at different locations in Mumbai, India, on 13 July 2011 between 18:54 and 19:06 IST. On 21 February 2013, at around 19:00 IST, two blasts occurred in the city of Hyderabad, India. The bombs exploded in Dilsukhnagar, a crowded shopping area, within 100 metres (330 ft) of each other. The first explosion occurred outside a roadside eatery named A1 Mirchi, next to the Anand Tiffin Centre and opposite the Konark movie hall, followed by the second one two minutes later near the Route 107 bus stand close to the Venkatadri theatre. Al Ummah is a radical muslim Jihadi terrorist organisation mainly based in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was banned by the Government of Tamil Nadu for perpetrating the 1998 Coimbatore bombings.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2013 Patna bombings</span> 2013 attacks in Bihar, India

On 27 October 2013, a series of bomb blasts rocked the Indian city of Patna, Bihar at a massive election rally for Narendra Modi, the then Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for Prime Minister. Of the estimated 300,000 participants at the "Hunkar" rally, six people were killed and 85 others were injured in eight bomb blasts.

The 2014 Chennai train bombing is the explosion of two low-intensity bombs in the early hours of 1 May 2014, Thursday at Chennai Central railway station. The Bangalore–Guwahati Kaziranga Superfast Express which came from Bangalore and was going towards Guwahati was standing on platform 09 of Chennai Central railway station, when two blasts occurred in two coaches S4 and S5. The bombing killed one female passenger and injured at least fourteen others.

Operation Puttur was an anti-terror operation launched jointly by the Tamil Nadu Police and the Andhra Pradesh Police, which captured two terror suspects in Puttur on 5 October 2013. Part of the banned Al Ummah outfit, they were planning to plant bombs at the famed Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, the most visited temple in India. The suspects also had a plan to murder a famous person in Chennai in the name of the "Muslim Defence Force." The operation reportedly ended those conspiracies.
