The 2013–14 Santiago Island League (South) season was the competition of the second and third tier football in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. The winner qualified into the 2014 Cape Verdean Football Championships. It started on 15 November 2013 and finished on 30 March 2014. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Santiago Sul, ARFSS). [1] Sporting Praia won the 8th title and finished with 44 points. Their next championship title for Sporting would be in 2017.

Santiago, Cape Verde largest island of Cape Verde

Santiago is the largest island of Cape Verde, its most important agricultural centre and home to half the nation’s population. Part of the Sotavento Islands, it lies between the islands of Maio and Fogo. It was the first of the islands to be settled: the town of Ribeira Grande was founded in 1462. Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

Overview

Sporting Praia was the defending team of the title. A total of 21 clubs participated in the competition, 10 in the Premier Division and 11 in the Second Division. A total of 233 goals were scored, 8 goals scored in two promotional matches, its combined total is 241.

Tchadense was relegated and spend the next two seasons in the Second Division while Garridos, champion of the Second Division was promoted and spent the next three seasons in the Premier Division.

The biggest win were two matches with 5 goals, Sporting Praia 5-0 Vitória (2 March) and Tchadense 0-5 Desportivo da Praia (16 March).

The first six weeks had Desportivo took the lead, Sporting took it for the rest of the season.

Both Desportivo and Travadores scored the most number of goals numbering 37, Sporting was second with 36 and Vitòria scored the least numbering 12, a club who scored the least that was 5th place. Varanda conceded the most number of goals numbering 37, Tchadense second with 24 and Vitòria with 32, a club who conceded the most that was 5th place.

Sporting's 28 match unbeaten streak which started from February 18, 2012 came to an end after a loss to Travadores which was 0-1 on November 16. Sporting's record 28 match unbeaten streak was a record until March 5, 2017 which would be shared, it was surpassed on March 10, 2017 and is now the club's second record.

There were no competition on the second week of December due to the regional cup competitions.

The season marked Dário's end to his eleven season career with Sporting Praia and would later retire.

Dário Osvaldo Dias Furtado, simply Dário, is a retired Cape Verdean footballer who played for Sporting Clube da Praia mainly as a left defender. He is currently manager of Sporting Praia's U-15 team.

Sporting Clube da Praia, short form: Sporting Praia is a professional football club that plays in the Santiago South Premier Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the capital city of Praia in the island of Santiago, one of the unrelegated clubs in the south of the island along with three of the city's four historically mightiest clubs including Académica, Boavista and CD Travadores. Along with Académcia, Boavista, Desportivo, Travadores and Vitória, it is one of several teams that share the same ground, Estádio da Várzea, which has a capacity of 8,000. Sporting has won six championships since independence and a few before independence. The first title was won in the summer of 1962 before independence. Sporting recently won the 2017 national title. Its current president is Carlos Daniel Caetano and its manager is Lito, who once played for Portuguese clubs as footballer.

Boavista FC (Cape Verde)

Boavista Futebol Clube is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Santiago Island South Zone League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Praia in the island of Santiago. The team has only reached a few of these games before and after independence. Its current president is Luis Manuel Semedo who once coached Boa Vista's Académica Operária. and its manager is Nelito Antunes.

The 2011–12 Santiago Island League (South) season began on 3 December and finished on 29 April. Sporting won the regional competition and qualified into the 2012 Cape Verdean Football Championships. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association.

2014–15 Santiago Island League (South)

The 2014–15 Santiago Island League (South) season was the competition of the second-tier football in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its started on 5 December 2013 and finished on 26 April 2014. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. Boavista won the second and most recent title and participated in the 2015 Cape Verdean Football Championships.

The 2015–16 Santiago Island League (South) season was the competition of the second and third tier football in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its started on 13 November 2014 and finished on 8 May 2016. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All the matches were played at Estádio da Várzea. Desportivo won the first and only title for the South Zone and participated in the 2016 Cape Verdean Football Championships and finished with 47 points, Desportivo's last title win for Santiago was in 1990 and totals three overall.

The 2015–16 Académica da Praia season were in the Santiago Island League South regional premier division of association football. The club finished 4th after Sporting Praia and behind ADESBA with 43 points, more than half more and 32 goals, double than last season.

The 2016–17 Santiago South Premier Division season was the 15th second tier football competition in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, from 4 November 2016 to 30 April 2017. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All the matches were played at Estádio da Várzea. Sporting Praia won their next title in three years which was their 10th title and participated in the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships and played in Group C that includes Sporting Brava, Sporting Praia had 55 points and made it a club record, overall of any regional tier 2 championship competitions, it was third behind of the clubs of the island's North Zone, GD Varandinha with 63 and Scorpion Vermelho with 61. Also Sporting Praia qualified in the 2017 Santiago South Super Cup and faced Os Garridos, runner up in the regional cup competitions as Sporting was also cup winner, Sporting would win that title.

The 2015–16 CD Travadores season were in the island division of football (soccer). The club finished 7th after Os Garridos and ahead of Varanda with 16 points and 17 goals averaged less than one per match.

The 2016–17 Sporting Clube da Praia season were in the island division of football (soccer). The club won the island's 9th regional and later the 10th national title, their next in five years.

As Sporting Praia were also 2016-17 champions on April 8, Garridos achieved qualification into the upcoming 2017 Santiago South Super Cup, its qualification status was runner-up.

The 2017-18 Santiago South Cup season is the current competition of the regional football cup in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. The season started on 29 November, four later than the previous edition. The cup competition is organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All the matches are being played at Estádio da Várzea.

The 2002 Santiago South Premier Division season began on 12 January and finished on 21 April. Sporting won the regional competition and qualified into the 2002 Cape Verdean Football Championships. The championship was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. The competition returned after the 2001 season was not held due to the condition of the stadium at the Municipal Stadium. All matches were played at Campo de Sucupira which was temporarily used up until 2007. The field no longer exists today and several buildings dominate the former field.
