The 2013–14 South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team represented the University of South Dakota during the 2013–14 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Coyotes, led by first year interim head coach and former assistant Joey James, played their home games at the DakotaDome and were members of The Summit League. They finished the season 12–18, 6–8 in The Summit League play to finish in fifth place. They lost in the quarterfinals of The Summit League tournament to Denver.
Interim head coach Joey James was not retained at the end of the season.

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks are the athletic teams that represent the University of North Dakota (UND), located in the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota. The Fighting Hawks compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level as a member of the Summit League. With 17 varsity teams, North Dakota is best known for its Ice Hockey team and American Football team. North Dakota's main rivalries are with the North Dakota State Bison and the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The North Dakota State Bison are the athletic teams of North Dakota State University (NDSU), which is located in the city of Fargo, North Dakota. The teams are often called the "Thundering Herd". The current logo is a bison.
The South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team represents the University of South Dakota in NCAA Division I basketball. They are currently members of the Summit League. They are led by head coach Eric Peterson and play their home games at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Prior to joining Division I beginning with the 2008–09 season, the Coyotes were members of NCAA Division II in the North Central Conference. They were Division II National Champions in 1958.

Craig Francis Smith is an American college basketball coach who is the head coach for the Utah Utes men's team of the Big 12 Conference. He served as an assistant for Tim Miles at four schools – Mayville State, North Dakota State, Colorado State, and Nebraska. Smith was also the head coach at Mayville State from 2004 to 2007, at South Dakota from 2014 to 2018, and at Utah State from 2018 to 2021.
The 2015–16 South Dakota Coyotes women's basketball team represented University of South Dakota in the 2015–16 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Coyotes, led by fourth-year head by Amy Williams, played their home games at the DakotaDome and were members of Summit League. They finished the season 32–6, 15–1 in Summit League play to win the Summit League regular season title. They advanced to the championship of the Summit League women's tournament where they lost to their in-state rival South Dakota State. They received an automatic trip to the Women's National Invitation Tournament, where they advanced to the championship game, defeating Florida Gulf Coast.
The 2016–17 South Dakota Coyotes men's basketball team represented the University of South Dakota during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Coyotes, led by second-year head coach Craig Smith, played their home games at the brand new Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion, South Dakota as members of Summit League. They finished the season 22–12, 12–4 in Summit League play to win the Summit League regular season championship. As the No. 1 seed in the Summit League tournament, they defeated Western Illinois in the quarterfinals before losing to South Dakota State in the semifinals. As a regular season conference champion who failed to win their conference tournament title, they received an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament where they lost in the first round to Iowa.

They finished the season 26–9, 11–3 in Summit League play to finish in second place. They defeated Omaha and Denver to advance to the championship game of the Summit League where they lost to South Dakota State. They were invited to the College Basketball Invitational where they lost in the first round to North Texas.

The Coyotes finished the season ranked 17th in the AP Poll and eleventh in the coaches poll. It was the highest finish by any Summit League team and were in the top 25 ranking for 16 straight weeks, also setting a record.

After winning the 2021–22 Summit League tournament, South Dakota received an automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. Surprising Ole Miss, the Coyotes upset 2nd seeded Baylor to advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the school's first time.
