The 2013–14 Sporting Clube da Praia season were in the island and top division of Cape Verdean football. They would be regional champions and qualified into the national championship. Their success would reach as high as the Semifinals where they lost to Académica from the island of Fogo west of Praia. [1] [2]

Football in Cape Verde

Football is the most popular sport in Cape Verde. The league is divided into eleven divisions, of which seven of them are singles and two islands, Santiago and Santo Antão has two zones since 2000. The football association is a federation which is known as the Cape Verdean Football Federation, it became affiliated with CAF in 1986 and later with FIFA in 2001.

Académica do Fogo

Associação Académica do Fogo is a football club that currently plays in the Campeonato Nacional de Cabo Verde and in the Fogo Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the island of Fogo and plays in the stadium with a capacity of 1000. The logo and the uniform as well as other teams with the name Académica and Académico in Cape Verde is identical to Académica de Coimbra, it features the volcanic mountain on the right. The club name and the year of foundation are at the bottom. Académica do Fogo are one of the unrelegated clubs on the island which includes Vulcânicos and Botafogo.

Fogo is an island in the Sotavento group of Cape Verde. Its population is 35,837 (2015), with an area of 476 km². It reaches the highest altitude of all the islands in Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres above sea level at the summit of its active volcano, Pico do Fogo.

The club scored a total of 45 goals. Of which 36 was scored in the Santiago South League and 9 in the national championships, 7 in the regular season and 2 in the playoffs. Their total points was 44 for the island and 13 in the national championships.

Santiago Island League (South)

The 2013-14 season would start being ninth, the first match on November 16 lost to Travadores 0-1, second to last place. The next 8 matches were victorious, the greatest match was with Academica da Praia who won with 4 goals on December 1, 2013. Also their rankings slowly gained 5th when they challenged Tchadense, then 3rd for the next three weeks and finally first place after defeating Desportivo Praia on January 19. The match on February 1 was tied 2 apiece with CD Travadores, Sporting won the next two matches until Boavista tied the match with 1 each on February 21, the club went to have a three match winning streak until Desportivo clumbered Sporting 1-0 on March 22. The final match of the season had Sporting defeated Bairro 2-0 on March 30 and claimed their recent island title. [1]

Clube Desportivo Travadores is a football club in the Santiago South Premier Division in Cape Verde and are one of the unrelegated clubs of the Premier Division. It is based in the capital city of Praia, on the island of Santiago, and plays in a stadium with a capacity of 8,000. It is affiliated with S.L. Benfica and was the first Benfica affiliate in Cape Verde and the western part of West Africa. Its nicknames are indios and águias

The club had a total of 36 goals of which 19 were scored at home and 17 were scored away. Up to week 10, around 70% of the goals were scored away, it was mostly scored away at week 12 and after week 16, more than half were away.

Santiago South/Praia Cup

Sporting Praia claimed their first and only cup during the season.

Cape Verdean National League

The club achieved entry into the national championships after winning the regional title of Santiago South. Sporting succeed as high as the semis, their overall ranking was third with two goals scored in the playoffs. Of its straight appearances, Sporting competed for the tenth straight time, one of the highest, the highest being Brava's Nô Pintcha in the country.

Clube Desportivo Nô Pintcha is a football club in Cape Verde that plays in the Brava Island Division in Cape Verde. It is based in Cidade Nova Sintra the island of Brava.

The club participated in Group A and finished first with 13 points and 4 wins. [1] [2] Their overall championship titles (their last title won in 2012) numbering nine became second behind CS Mindelense after their win, it continues into the present day with three titles less than Mindelense in 2016.

CS Mindelense

Clube Sportivo Mindelense (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: KS Mindelensi, São Vicente Crioulo: KS Mindelense is a football club that plays in the Premier division of the Interisland League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo in the island of São Vicente. Mindelense is the oldest club in Cape Verde. It is the team won the most cups before and after independence especially in the 1950s and the 1970s with nine titles before independence and eleven after independence. Their first participation in the national division before independence was unofficially in 1938 and officially in 1954, Mindelense first appeared after independence in 1980. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Batuque and Derby. Its current chairman is Daniel de Jesus. The club's nickname is Leões Encarnados or the Incarnated Lions. A nickname that is used less often is the Red Devils or the Diablos Vermelhos.

Their first match against Académica do Porto Novo ended in a scoreless draw on April 6. Sporting Praia went on for a four-game winning streak, they defeated Paulense on April 12, Sporting Brava on April 19, the first-timer Grémio Nhagar of the north of the island on April 26 and Mindelo's FC Derby on May 4. Académica do Porto Novo

Associação Académica do Porto Novo is a multi-sport club that plays in the Santo Antão Island League South Zone in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Porto Novo in the southeastern part of the island of Santo Antão. Sporting activities includes football and volleyball. Its current head is Osvaldinho Silva Lopes and its coach is Gunga. The nickname of the club like many other Académicas is Mica.

Playoffs

As they were first in the group, the club headed on to the semis and faced with Académica of Fogo, a club from the west and dared to defeat them. All two semi-final matches ended in draws, the first with nil and the second with two, Sporting lost in the penalty kicks and ended their appearance in the 2014 national season. [1] The club's next appearance will be in three years, the 2017 Football Championships

The scheduling was completed on November 16 and the group system was kept insteading of becoming a one portion season without playoffs and was the last time. CS Mindelense won the record breaking title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win four in a row, the highest ever, also it was Mindelense's last. Mindelense chose to not participate in the CAF Champions League competition in 2017, Académica do Porto Novo did not participate in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup, both of the clubs due to financial concerns, of any club, it is the eighth consecutive time and becomes the recent African nation not to bring a champion to the continentals for the most consecutive years, in the cup competition, Cape Verde is the longest for not bringing a club in Africa lasting for more than 15 years straight, not even the three national cup winners competed. The tournament was organized by the Santiago South Regional Football Association. All the matches were played at Estádio da Várzea. Sporting Praia won their next title in three years which was their 10th title and participated in the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships and played in Group C that includes Sporting Brava, Sporting Praia had 55 points and made it a club record, overall of any regional tier 2 championship competitions, it was third behind of the clubs of the island's North Zone, GD Varandinha with 63 and Scorpion Vermelho with 61. Also Sporting Praia qualified in the 2017 Santiago South Super Cup and faced Os Garridos, runner up in the regional cup competitions as Sporting was also cup winner, Sporting would win that title.
