On 3 April 2016, Abkhazia held local elections for the 6th convocations of its local assemblies in all districts except Gali.
The terms of the 5th convocations had originally been set to expire in February 2015, but were extended on 17 December 2014 by the People's Assembly. On 3 February 2016, the People's Assembly extended elections in Gali District once again, until 12 February 2017, because of the unresolved passport situation. [1] [2] [3]
The election for Sukhumi City Council was contested by 82 candidates. Originally, 88 candidates had been nominated but three refused to stand as candidate. [4] Of the remaining 85 candidates, twelve were nominated by United Abkhazia, one by the Abkhazian Railways and the rest by initiative groups. 18 were women. [5] 14 of the candidates were incumbent deputies. [6] All but one of the candidates were successfully registered. [4] Two further candidates withdrew at a later date. [7]
Turnout was 14,718 out of 39,070 eligible voters (38%). The elections in constituencies no. 21 and 23 were declared invalid, as voter turnout was below 25%. [8] [9] Reruns in these constituencies were held on 29 May. [10] One of the elected council members was a woman. [11]

65 candidates were nominated in 25 constituencies, 6 of whom women. [13] Preliminary turnout was 46%. [14] One of the elected deputies was a woman and only four were incumbents. [11] [15]
The new assembly elected Astan Agrba as its chairman and Aleksandr Tsyshba as its deputy chairman. [15]

55 candidates were nominated in 29 constituencies, 6 of whom women. [13] All candidates were nominated by initiative groups.[ citation needed ] Turnout was reported as 41.5% and 55%. [14] One of the women was elected. [11] Among the elected deputies was long time New Athos mayor Feliks Dauta, who declared that after 13 years as mayor he wanted try his hand at being a deputy. [19]
The new council elected Roman Bazba as its chairman and Inal Tsveiba as its deputy chairman. [20] [21]
13 candidates were nominated in 9 constituencies, 4 of whom women. [13] Of the elected deputies, one was a woman. [11]
The new assembly re-elected Ramaz Smyr as its chairman and Temur Otyrba as its deputy chairman. [20]
28 candidates were nominated in 15 constituencies, 3 of whom women. [22] The election in constituency no. 12 was declared invalid because turnout was less than 25%. [11] Overall turnout was 42% out of 6611 registered voters. [14] Of the elected deputies, one was a woman. [11] All had been nominated by initiative groups. [20]
The new assembly elected Zaur Sangulia as its chairman and Rudolf Tarba as its deputy chairman. [20]
23 candidates were nominated in 16 constituencies, 4 of whom women. [13] All candidates were nominated by initiative groups. Turnout was 4268 out of 11,099 registered voters (39.6%). [14] Of the elected deputies, two were women. [11] The election in constituency no. 7 was declared invalid because two additional ballots were found, it will be repeated on 29 May. [23]
The new assembly re-elected Igor Mikvabia as its new chairman and Andronik Kondakchyan as its deputy chairman. [21] [24]
60 candidates were nominated in 32 constituencies, 7 of whom women. [13] Turnout was reported as 54.4% and 55.5%. [14] Among the elected deputies were 4 women and only about 10% were incumbents. [11]
The new assembly elected Adgur Kvitsinia as its chairman and Omari Shat-ipa as its deputy chairman. [25]
30 candidates were nominated in 15 constituencies, 5 of whom women. [13] Turnout was 46.4%. The election in constituency no. 14 (Chkhortol) was declared invalid because the two highest scoring candidates had received the same number of votes. [14] None of the 14 winning candidates were incumbents, 2 were women, 2 had been nominated by Amtsakhara and 12 by initiative groups. [11]
The new Assembly elected Damir Gorzolia as its chairman and Melis Jinjolia as its deputy chairman. [21] [26]
Sergei Shamba is a senior politician from Abkhazia. He is currently a member of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia and Chairman of United Abkhazia. He was Prime Minister of Abkhazia under President Sergei Bagapsh from 13 February 2010 until 27 September 2011. Between 1997 and 2010 he had been Minister for Foreign Affairs under both Bagapsh and his predecessor Vladislav Ardzinba, with only a half-year interruption in 2004. Shamba has twice unsuccessfully participated in presidential elections, in 2004 and 2011. He has been a staunch proponent for dialogue between Abkhazia and Georgia.
Pitsunda or Bichvinta is a resort town in the Gagra District of Abkhazia/Georgia. Founded by Greek colonists in the 5th century BC, Pitsunda became an important political and religious centre of the region in the antiquity and the Middle Ages. Since Soviet times it has been one of the main resorts of Abkhazia.

Valeri Ramshukhovich Bganba is an Abkhazian politician who served as the Prime Minister of Abkhazia from 18 September 2018 to 23 April 2020 and as the acting President of Abkhazia from 13 January to 23 April 2020. Prior to that he was the Speaker of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia from 2012 until 2017. He was elected as speaker on 3 April 2012 and was succeeded by Valery Kvarchia on 12 April 2017. Bganba became acting President on 1 June 2014, following the resignation of Alexander Ankvab as a result of the 2014 Abkhazian political crisis. On 25 September 2014 he was replaced by Raul Khajimba, the winner of the presidential elections on 24 August.
The 5th convocation of the People's Assembly of Abkhazia took office following the 2012 elections on 3 April 2012 and was replaced by the 6th convocation following the 2017 elections.
Presidential elections were held in the Republic of Abkhazia on 24 August 2014. The sixth such elections since the post of President of Abkhazia was created in 1994, they were held early due to the resignation of President Alexander Ankvab on 1 June 2014 following the 2014 Abkhazian political crisis. Four candidates contested the elections, which were won by Raul Khadjimba, who received just over 50% of the vote.
Zaur Avidzba (1953–2015) was a politician and businessman from Abkhazia who was murdered in 2015.

On 13 March 2004, Abkhazia held local elections for the 3rd convocations of its local assemblies, coinciding with early voting for the Russian presidential election of the following day. On 18 February, the People's Assembly rejected a proposal by President Vladislav Ardzinba to postpone the elections to coincide with the October 2004 presidential election, because all the necessary preparations had already been made.
Beslan Konstantinovich Bartsits is a former Prime Minister of Abkhazia, having been appointed by President Raul Khajimba on 5 August 2016 with his term ending 25 April 2018. In the past, he has served as Head of the Presidential Administration, Head of Gagra District and Member of Parliament.
Aslan Kobakhia is one of three current Vice Premiers and the current Minister for Internal Affairs of Abkhazia.
Daur Arshba is an Abkhazian politician. He is the Head of the Presidential Administration, having been appointed by President Raul Khajimba on 10 October 2016, and Chairman of the pro-government Forum for the National Unity of Abkhazia. In the past, he has served as Vice Speaker of the People's Assembly and as Head of Tkvarcheli District. Following the death of Gennadi Gagulia on 8 September 2018, Arshba was appointed Acting Prime Minister of Abkhazia, a position he held until 18 September 2018.
Legislative elections were held in Russia on 18 September 2016. On 5 October 2016 Sergey Naryshkin resigned because of his appointment as Director of SVR. On 14 June, the Central Election Commission scheduled an election in the Kingisepp constituency for 10 September 2017.
