The 2016 Campeonato Pernambucano (officially the 2016 Campeonato Pernambucano Celpe A1 for sponsorship reasons) [2] was the 102nd edition of the state championship of Pernambuco. The championship began on January 10 and ended on May 8. Twelve teams were competing, ten returning from the 2015 and two promoted from the 2015 Pernambucano U-23 Championship (Belo Jardim and Vitória das Tabocas). [3] Santa Cruz, the defending champions, won the finals against Sport 1–0 on aggregate. [4]

Tiebreakers

The teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  1. Higher number of wins;
  2. Superior goal difference;
  3. Head-to-head result between tied teams;
  4. Higher number of away wins;
  5. Fewest home losses;
  6. Draw in the headquarters of the Federação Pernambucana de Futebol.

Central, América and Serra Talhada qualified for 2016 Série D and 2017 Série D. Serra Talhada played the 2016 Série D but they declined to participate in the 2017 Série D. Their berth was used by Group A runners-up Atlético Pernambucano. [5]

The 2013 Campeonato Pernambucano, named Pernambucano Coca-Cola 2013 - Série A1 for sponsorship reasons, was the 99th edition of the state championship of Pernambuco. With the return of Copa do Nordeste in 2013 and the participation of three teams from the state, the formula of this edition was not the same as the previous championship. The competition is started on January 20 and concluded on May 19. Santa Cruz won their 27th championship, with Sport as runner-up. Petrolina and Belo Jardim were relegated to the second division of Campeonato Pernambucano.

The 2016 Copa do Nordeste was the 14th edition of the main football tournament featuring teams from the Brazilian Northeast Region. The competition featured 20 clubs, with Bahia and Pernambuco having three seeds each, and Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Sergipe, Alagoas, Paraíba, Maranhão and Piauí with two seeds each. Santa Cruz (Pernambuco) qualified to play in the 2016 Copa Sudamericana, after winning the final against Campinense (Paraíba) 3–2 on aggregate.
Santa Cruz also qualified to play in the 2017 Copa Sudamericana but CONMEBOL reduced the Brazilian berths from 8 to 6. Therefore, the champions Santa Cruz and Paysandu lost their Copa Sudamericana berths. Finally, they qualified for the 2017 Copa do Brasil Round of 16.
Ceará were the defending champion, but were eliminated by Santa Cruz in the quarterfinals.

The 2022 Campeonato Pernambucano was the 108th edition of the state championship of Pernambuco organized by FPF. The championship began on 22 January and ended on 30 April 2022.

The 2022 Campeonato Alagoano was the 92nd edition of the top football league in Alagoas organized by FAF. It began on 20 January and ended on 13 April 2022. CSA were the defending champions but were eliminated in the semi-finals.
