The 2016 Coral English Open was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 10 and 16 October 2016 at the EventCity in Manchester, England. [1] It was the seventh ranking event of the 2016/2017 season. [2]
This was the inaugural English Open event, being held as part of a new Home Nations Series introduced in the 2016/2017 season with the existing Welsh Open and new Northern Ireland Open and Scottish Open tournaments. [3] [4] The winner of the English Open is awarded the Davis Trophy which is named in honour of six-time world champion Steve Davis. [5]
Liang Wenbo captured his only ranking title by beating Judd Trump 9–6 in the final. [6] As a result, he qualified for the Champion of Champions in November. [7]
Alfie Burden made the 122nd official maximum break in the sixth frame of his first round match against Daniel Wells. It was Burden's first professional maximum break. [8]

Judd Trump is an English professional snooker player who is a former world champion and former world number one. Widely regarded as one of the sport's most talented players, he is currently sixth on the list of all-time ranking event winners, with 24 ranking titles. He has also won four Triple Crown titles.
Liang Wenbo is a Chinese former professional snooker player who is permanently banned from competition. During his career, Liang won one ranking title at the 2016 English Open, twice won the World Cup for China in 2011 and 2017 with teammate Ding Junhui, and reached one Triple Crown final at the 2015 UK Championship, which he lost to Neil Robertson. He made three maximum breaks in professional competition and achieved a career high of 11th in the snooker world rankings.
