Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Agnieszka Radwańska in the final, 6–2, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2009 China Open. It was her second China Open title.
Jelena Dokić was the defending champion, but lost in the second round to compatriot Olivia Rogowska.
Tamarine Tanasugarn and Zhang Shuai were the defending champions, but Tanasugarn chose not to participate. Zhang played alongside Yaroslava Shvedova, but lost in the first round to Tímea Babos and Olga Govortsova. First seeded Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai won the title, defeating in the final 3rd seeded Vania King and Galina Voskoboeva with the score 6–3, 4–6, [12–10].

Maria Sharapova defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final, 7–5, 7–6(10–8) to win the singles tennis title at the 2017 Tianjin Open. It was Sharapova's first title since serving a suspension for a doping offense, and her final career title before retiring in 2020.
