The 2016 South American Basketball Championship for Women was the 35th edition of the tournament. Nine teams participated in the competition, held in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, from 20 to 26 May 2016. [1]
In this round, the teams were drawn into two groups. The first two teams from each group advanced to the semifinals; the third teams advanced to the 5th place match.

Basketball at the 2004 Summer Olympics was the sixteenth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It took place at the Helliniko Olympic Indoor Arena, a part of the Hellinikon Olympic Complex, in Athens, for the preliminary rounds, with the later stages being held in the Olympic Indoor Hall at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex.
Basketball at the 1992 Summer Olympics was the thirteenth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It included the sport of basketball's men's and women's competitions of the 1992 Summer Olympics. The games were played at the Pavelló Olímpic de Badalona. 12 men's teams and 8 women's teams participated in the tournament.

Guaros de Lara is a Venezuelan professional basketball club, that is based in Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela. Guaros de Lara BBC has existed as a club in various different forms since 1983. It has existed in its current form since 2003.
The 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Men, later known as the FIBA AmeriCup, was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Americas, for the 2014 FIBA World Cup, in Spain. This FIBA AmeriCup tournament was held in Caracas, Venezuela, from August 30, to September 11, 2013. The top four teams qualified for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
The 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Women was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Americas at the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey. The tournament was held at the Gimnasio USBI in Xalapa, Mexico from 21 to 28 September 2013.
The 2015 FIBA Americas Championship for Women, held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Americas at the 2016 Summer Olympics Basketball Tournament in Brazil. The champion qualified directly for the Olympics.
The 2016 South American Basketball Championship was the 47th and last edition of the FIBA South American Basketball Championship. Ten teams participated in the competition, which was held in Caracas, Venezuela, from 26 June to 2 July 2016. The top five teams qualified for the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup and the top seven teams qualified for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification.
The 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, the 18th edition of FIBA's premier international tournament for women's national basketball teams, was held in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain from 22 to 30 September 2018. This was the first edition to use the name of FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. After the last edition in 2014, FIBA changed the name of the competition from the FIBA World Championship for Women, in order to align its name with that of the corresponding men's competition.
The 2017 FIBA Women's Asia Cup was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Asia and FIBA Oceania at the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain. The tournament was held from 23 to 29 July in Bangalore, India. Before this edition, the tournament was known as the FIBA Asia Championship for Women, and only involved FIBA Asia members. FIBA Oceania teams Australia and New Zealand, as well as Fiji competed in the tournament for the first time.
The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification for the FIBA Americas region, began in November 2017 and concluded in February 2019. The process determined the seven teams that would participate at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The 2018 South American Basketball Championship for Women was the 36th edition of the tournament. Eight teams participated in the competition, held in Tunja, Colombia, from 30 August to 4 September 2018.
The 2018 Liga Sudamericana de Básquetbol, or 2018 FIBA South American Basketball League, was the 23rd edition of the second-tier level continental professional club basketball competition in the Americas, the FIBA Americas League. Sixteen teams from South America competed over three rounds to determine the champion. The defending champions, Guaros de Lara, did not have the opportunity to defend their title, after the Venezuelan Basketball Federation failed to register the team in the competition, alleging financial troubles. Franca of Brazil won their first Liga Sudamericana de Básquetbol championship in team history by beating Instituto of Argentina.
The 2022 FIBA U18 Women's South American Championship was the 21st edition of the South American basketball championship for women's under-17/under-18 national teams. It was played at Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 3 to 9 April 2022. Brazil won the tournament for the 12th time.
The 2022 South American Basketball Championship for Women was the 37th edition of the tournament. Eight teams participated in the competition, held at Arena La Pedrera in Villa Mercedes and Estadio Ave Fénix in San Luis, Argentina, from 1 to 6 August 2022.
The 2023 FIBA U17 South American Championship was the 27th edition of the South American basketball championship for men's under-17 national teams. The tournament was played in Valledupar, Colombia, from 16 to 20 November 2023.
The 2023 FIBA U17 Women's South American Championship was the 22nd edition of the South American basketball championship for women's under-17 national teams. The tournament was played in Bucaramanga, Colombia, from 26 November to 2 December 2023.
The 2022 FIBA U18 South American Championship was the 26th edition of the South American basketball championship for men's under-17/under-18 national teams. The tournament was played in Caracas, Venezuela, from 21 to 26 March 2022. Brazil won the tournament for the 10th time.
The 2018 FIBA U15 South American Championship was the 28th edition of the South American basketball championship for men's under-15 national teams. The tournament was played at Estadio Club Atlético Atenas in Montevideo, Uruguay, from 6 to 11 November 2018.
The 2018 FIBA U15 Women's South American Championship was the 22nd edition of the South American basketball championship for women's under-15 national teams. The tournament was played at Polideportivo 21 de abril in Puerto Aysén, Chile, from 23 to 27 November 2022.
