The 2018 South American Basketball Championship for Women was the 36th edition of the tournament. Eight teams participated in the competition, held in Tunja, Colombia, from 30 August to 4 September 2018. [2]
In this round, the teams were drawn into two groups. The first two teams from each group advanced to the semifinals; the other teams advanced to the 5th–8th place playoffs.

Basketball at the 1988 Summer Olympics was the twelfth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It took place at the Jamsil Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea from 17 September to 30 September 1988. The United States won the gold medal in the women's competition, repeating their performance from the 1984 tournament.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup is an international basketball competition between the senior men's national teams of the members of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), the sport's global governing body. It takes place every four years and is considered the flagship event of FIBA.
The Colombia national basketball team represents Colombia in men's international basketball competitions and organized and run by the Colombia Basketball Federation.
The 2011 FIBA Americas Championship for Women was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Americas at the women's basketball tournament at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The tournament was held at Coliseo Álvaro Sánchez Silva in Neiva, Colombia from September 24 to October 1. It was the first FIBA Americas Championship for Women to have 10 countries competing.
The 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women, the 17th edition of FIBA's premier international tournament for women's national basketball teams, was held in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey from 27 September to 5 October 2014.
The 2016 South American Basketball Championship for Women was the 35th edition of the tournament. Nine teams participated in the competition, held in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, from 20 to 26 May 2016.
The 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, the 18th edition of FIBA's premier international tournament for women's national basketball teams, was held in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain from 22 to 30 September 2018. This was the first edition to use the name of FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. After the last edition in 2014, FIBA changed the name of the competition from the FIBA World Championship for Women, in order to align its name with that of the corresponding men's competition.
The 2017 FIBA Women's Asia Cup was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Asia and FIBA Oceania at the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain. The tournament was held from 23 to 29 July in Bangalore, India. Before this edition, the tournament was known as the FIBA Asia Championship for Women, and only involved FIBA Asia members. FIBA Oceania teams Australia and New Zealand, as well as Fiji competed in the tournament for the first time.
The 2017 FIBA Women's AmeriCup was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 6 to 13 August 2017. It awarded three spots for FIBA Americas to the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain.
The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification for the FIBA Americas region, began in November 2017 and concluded in February 2019. The process determined the seven teams that would participate at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The 2019 FIBA Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup was a tournament organised by FIBA for women's youth national teams aged 19 years old and below and took place in Bangkok, Thailand from 20 to 28 July 2019. Colombia, Germany and Mozambique made their U-19 Women's Basketball World Cup debut.
The 2018 FIBA Under-18 Women's Americas Championship is an international basketball competition that currently takes place from August 1–7, 2018 in Mexico City, Mexico. This is the twelfth edition of the championship, and is the FIBA Americas qualifying tournament for the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Thailand. Eight national teams from across the Americas, composed of women aged 19 and under, will compete in the tournament.

The 2018 Liga Sudamericana de Básquetbol, or 2018 FIBA South American Basketball League, was the 23rd edition of the second-tier level continental professional club basketball competition in the Americas, the FIBA Americas League. Sixteen teams from South America competed over three rounds to determine the champion. The defending champions, Guaros de Lara, did not have the opportunity to defend their title, after the Venezuelan Basketball Federation failed to register the team in the competition, alleging financial troubles. Franca of Brazil won their first Liga Sudamericana de Básquetbol championship in team history by beating Instituto of Argentina.
The 2022 FIBA U18 Women's South American Championship was the 21st edition of the South American basketball championship for women's under-17/under-18 national teams. It was played at Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 3 to 9 April 2022. Brazil won the tournament for the 12th time.
The 2022 South American Basketball Championship for Women was the 37th edition of the tournament. Eight teams participated in the competition, held at Arena La Pedrera in Villa Mercedes and Estadio Ave Fénix in San Luis, Argentina, from 1 to 6 August 2022.
The 2023 FIBA U17 South American Championship was the 27th edition of the South American basketball championship for men's under-17 national teams. The tournament was played in Valledupar, Colombia, from 16 to 20 November 2023.
The 2022 FIBA U15 South American Championship was the 29th edition of the South American basketball championship for men's under-15 national teams. The tournament was played at Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 16 to 20 November 2022.
The 2023 FIBA U17 Women's South American Championship was the 22nd edition of the South American basketball championship for women's under-17 national teams. The tournament was played in Bucaramanga, Colombia, from 26 November to 2 December 2023.
The 2022 FIBA U15 Women's South American Championship was the 23rd edition of the South American basketball championship for women's under-15 national teams. The tournament was played at CEO 2 in Santiago, Chile, from 23 to 27 November 2022.
