The 2016 USA Swimming Olympic trials was held for the third straight quadrennial at CenturyLink Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska from June 26 to July 3, 2016. [1] Those qualifying competed for the United States in Swimming at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Qualification criteria

A maximum of 52 swimmers (26 of each sex, not including open water swimmers) were chosen for the 2016 Summer Olympics. To make the Olympic team, a swimmer must place in the top two in one of the thirteen individual events. To be considered for the U.S. 4×100-meter and 4×200-meter freestyle relay teams, a swimmer must place in the top six in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle, respectively. Swimmers must have achieved a time standard to be eligible to compete in the U.S. Olympic trials: [2]

Events

The meet featured twenty-six individual events all swam in a long course (50-meter) pool—thirteen events for men and thirteen events for women. Events 200 meters and shorter were held with preliminaries, semifinals and finals, while events 400 meters and longer were held with preliminaries and finals. Semifinals featured sixteen swimmers in two heats; the finals included eight swimmers in a single heat. Preliminaries were seeded with ten lanes. The U.S. Open Swimming Championships, or U.S. Open, is a championship meet organized by USA Swimming which is open to international teams/swimmers. It was first held in 1985, and was held annually in December through 2006. Beginning in 2007, the meet's first-weekend-of-December timing was given over to the resurrected USA Short Course Nationals, and the U.S. Open moved to being held on an as-needed basis. Since 2007, the meet has been held in early August, in years where the U.S. Nationals are not held in August.

Ryan Fitzgerald Murphy is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in backstroke. He is a 4-time Olympic gold medalist and the world-record holder in the men's 100-meter backstroke.

The 2008 United States Olympic trials for swimming events was held from June 29 to July 6 at the CenturyLink Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. It was the qualifying meet for American swimmers who hoped to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Michael Andrew (swimmer) American swimmer

Michael Andrew is an American competitive swimmer and an Olympic gold medalist. He was the 2016 world champion in the 100 meter individual medley. At his first Olympic Games, the 2020 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal and set a world record as part of the 4x100 meter medley relay, placed fourth in the 100 meter breaststroke, fourth in the 50 meter freestyle, and fifth in the 200 meter individual medley. Andrew's swims in 2021 at the 2020 Olympics made him the first swimmer to represent the United States at an Olympic Games in an individual breaststroke event as well as another individual event other than an individual medley in the then-125-year-history of swimming at the Summer Olympics.

The 2020 USA Swimming Olympic trials was held at CHI Health Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska, for a fourth consecutive time. Originally scheduled from June 21 to 28, 2020, it was rescheduled to June 4 to 7, 2021, and June 13 to 20, 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic resulting in the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics to 2021. The meet served as the national championships in swimming for the United States. Those qualifying competed for the United States in swimming at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Shaine Casas is an American professional swimmer. He was national champion in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2019 National Championships. In 2021 he was a three-time NCAA champion, once in the 100-yard backstroke, once in the 200-yard backstroke, and once in the 200-yard individual medley. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships he won a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke and the 4×50-meter medley relay, a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, the 4×100-meter medley relay, and the 4×50-meter mixed medley relay, and a bronze medal as part of the 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
