The 2016-17 Fogo Island League season was the competition of the second and third tier football in the island of Fogo, Cape Verde. Its started later on 26 November 2014 [1] and finished on 23 April 2015, a day earlier. The tournament was organized by the Fogo Regional Football Association (Associação Regional do Fogo de Futebol, ARFF). [2] Vulcânicos won the tenth straight and recent title and competed in the Cape Verdean Football Championships in mid-May, the first in the three-group system, the club was in Group A and failed to qualify into the knockout stage.

Fogo, Cape Verde island in Cape Verde

Fogo is an island in the Sotavento group of Cape Verde. Its population is 35,837 (2015), with an area of 476 km². It reaches the highest altitude of all the islands in Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres above sea level at the summit of its active volcano, Pico do Fogo.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

Overview

Vulcânicos was the defending team of the title. A total of 18 clubs participated in the competition, 10 in the Premier Division as well as in the Second Division. Clubs based in the municipalities of São Filipe and Santa Catarina do Fogo were played at Estádio 5 de Julho while clubs based in Mosteiros Municipality were played at Estádio Francisco José Rodrigues, matches in Mosteiros were played each Saturday at 16:00, the 12th round match were played on Friday.

The Fogo Premier Division is a tier-2 regional championship played in Fogo Island, Cape Verde. The competition are organized by the Fogo Regional Football Association. The winner of the championship plays in the Cape Verdean football Championships of each season while the last placed club relegates and participates in the Second Division in the following season.

Estádio 5 de Julho

Estádio 5 de Julho is a multi-purpose stadium in São Filipe, Cape Verde just east of the city center known as Bila Baxo and is near Alto da Aguadinha. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium holds 1,000 people. The stadium is named with the date of Cape Verdean independence.

Estádio Francisco José Rodrigues

Estádio Francisco José Rodrigues is a multi-use stadium in Mosteiros on the island of Fogo, Cape Verde, as the island size is small, it is the only sports venue on the island. It is used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Cutelinho and Nô Pintcha dos Mosteiros, clubs based from other parts of the municipality also plays at the stadium including Grito Povo. The stadium holds 1,000 people and its ground is artificial grass with its size being 100 by 64 meters and the longest going nearly east-west with a 20 degree angle towards the north.. The stadium is are one of four operated by the Fogo Regional Football Association (ARFF), of which two are of the Premier Division.

The football (soccer) calendar was competed in October in São Filipe and determined the ordering, the date and time of the matches.

A total of 358 goals were scored, 12 less than last season. The largest win was Académica who scored 14-0 over Baxada on April 23, it was the highest in several years. Vulcânico made an 18 match unbeaten streak at the regional championships, their last loss was on March 22, 2016 where they lost to Spartak 2-3, their next and last was to Nô Pintcha Mosteiros.

Nô Pintcha held the number one spot for the first two rounds, Académica Fogo took it up to the 11th round on February 25, Vulcânicos took it for the rest of the season. In the first part, the club only had a point difference, Vulcânico lost to Nô Pintcha on April 1 and Académica Fogo made a goal draw with ABC Patim, in the last few rounds Vulcânicos and Académcia had the same points but Vulcânicos scored more and finished with Vulcânicos scoring 66 goals, five more than Académica.

The Second Division started later on December 3 and finished on May 14. In the Second Division, Nova Era defeated Brasilim 0-20 in a match in around February 2016 and made it the highest scoring match of any Second Division competitions in Cape Verde and any tiers, not just Fogo, but all of the country. Nova Era won their second Second Division championship title and qualified into the Premier Division in the following season in October after six years being in that division. In three years after Parque Real, Atlético Mosteiros became the next club to be the first ever into the regional Premier Division after being runner up in the final phase. Also in the Second Division, it was the last featuring ten clubs, twelve clubs would feature in the following season with an extra club in each of the two groups.

Cape Verdean Football Federation

The Cape Verdean Football Federation is the governing body of football in Cape Verde. It was founded in 1982, affiliated to FIFA in 1986 and to CAF in 2000. It organizes the national football league and the national team.

Académica do Fogo

Associação Académica do Fogo is a football club that currently plays in the Campeonato Nacional de Cabo Verde and in the Fogo Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the island of Fogo and plays in the stadium with a capacity of 1000. The logo and the uniform as well as other teams with the name Académica and Académico in Cape Verde is identical to Académica de Coimbra, it features the volcanic mountain on the right. The club name and the year of foundation are at the bottom. Académica do Fogo are one of the unrelegated clubs on the island which includes Vulcânicos and Botafogo.

Vulcânicos Futebol Clube or Vulcânico Clube do Fogo is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Fogo Island Division in Cape Verde. It is based in São Filipe the island of Fogo. The club has a total of nine island titles. Académica do Fogo are one of the unrelegated clubs on the island which includes Académica and Botafogo. Its current chairman is Raúl Santos who recently became in May 2017, its manager is Danildo Diniz and its goalkeeping coach is Emanuel Gomes.

The tournament was organized by the Fogo Regional Football Association. Académica Fogo won the 13th title, it was also the club's last title won.

The 2014-15 Fogo Island League season was the competition of the second and third tier football in the island of Fogo, Cape Verde. Its started on 15 November 2014 and finished on 19 April 2015. The tournament was organized by the Fogo Regional Football Association. Spartak d'Aguadinha won the first title and competed for the first time in the Cape Verdean National Championships in May.

Associação Spartak D'Aguadinha is a sports club whose football team had played in the Premier division and plays in the Fogo Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in São Filipe's subdivision of Aguadinha located next to Bila Baxo in the island of Fogo and plays at Estádio 5 de Julho. Spartak d'Aguadinha also has a basketball, volleyball and now a futsal department.

The 1999 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 20th of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. GD Amarantes won their first and only title. Sporting Clube da Praia would be the only time that a non-winning title would participate in the 2000 CAF Champions League, the criteria for qualification was not continued. No club took part in the 2000 CAF Winners' Cup.

Cutelinho Futebol Clube is a professional football club that currently plays in the Fogo Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the village of Mosteiros in the northeastern part of the island and plays in the stadium with a capacity of 1000. Its current manager is Amarildo Baessa. Its nickname is leoninhos which means little lions in Portuguese. On September 2, 1996, the team faced Desportivo de Cova Figueira for the first time and defeated that club 3-1 in the opening tournament.

Grupo Desportivo Benfica de Santa Cruz, sometimes as Grupo Desportivo Benfica is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Santiago Island North League in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Calheta de São Miguel in the island of Santiago and plays at Estádio Municipal 25 de Julho located northwest of the city center. Since the implementation of the two tier regional system in 2015, the club are one of ten unrelegated clubs of northern Santiago.

The 2016–17 Vulcânicos FCseason were in the island and top division of Cape Verdean football. Again the season was successful for the club. The club won their 10th title which was also their second straight. Vulcânico will qualify into the regional Super Cup as champion, the next competition in three years.

The 2017–18 season is the season of competitive football (soccer) in Cape Verde.

The Fogo (Island) Super Cup is a regional super cup competition played during the season in the island of Fogo, Cape Verde. The competition is organized by the Fogo Regional Football Association. Its current champions is Vulcânicos who won their second title, which was their next in a decade. The regional champion competes with the cup champion. If a champion also has a cup title, a cup club who is runner-up qualifies. The upcoming super cup will feature the champion Vulcânicos and the cup winner Académica do Fogo.

The 2011–12 Fogo Island League season began on 19 November and finished on 22 April. Académica do Fogo won their 11th title and qualified into the 2012 Cape Verdean Football Championships. The championship was organized by the Fogo Regional Football Association.

The 2011–12 Botafogo FC season were in the island division of Cape Verdean football. The club finished third place behind the other top clubs of the island, Vulcânicos and Académica do Fogo.
