Marco Cecchinato won his first ATP title, defeating Millman in the final, 7–5, 6–4. Cecchinato was a lucky loser, the ninth in ATP Tour history to win a title.

Roger Federer was the defending champion, but lost to Borna Ćorić in the final. This was Ćorić's first ATP 500 title. With Federer's loss, Rafael Nadal regained the world No. 1 ranking.

Novak Djokovic was the defending champion, but chose not to participate this year.

Peter Gojowczyk was the defending champion, but lost to Kei Nishikori in the second round.

Rafael Nadal was the defending champion but withdrew with a knee injury before the tournament began.

Novak Djokovic defeated Borna Ćorić in the final, 6–3, 6–4 to win the singles title at the 2018 Shanghai Masters. It was his record fourth Shanghai Masters title, and 32nd Masters 1000 title overall.

Dominic Thiem defeated Roger Federer in the final, 3–6, 6–3, 7–5, to win the men's singles title at the 2019 Indian Wells Masters. It was his first ATP Tour Masters 1000 title. Thiem became the first Austrian to win a Masters 1000-level title since Thomas Muster won the 1997 Miami Open.

Alexander Zverev defeated Matteo Berrettini in the final, 6–7(8–10), 6–4, 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2021 Madrid Open. It was Zverev's fourth ATP Masters 1000 title, his first since winning Madrid in 2018, and his 15th career ATP Tour singles title overall. Berrettini was in contention to become the second Italian to be crowned a Masters 1000 champion in his first final at this level.

Matteo Berrettini was the defending champion from when the event was last held in 2019, but could not participate since he was still competing in the 2021 French Open at the beginning of the tournament.

Feliciano López was the defending champion from when the event was last held in 2019, but lost in the second round to Denis Shapovalov.

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Diego Schwartzman in the final, 6–4, 6–2 to win the singles title at the 2022 Rio Open. Alcaraz became the youngest winner of an ATP Tour 500 event since the category was created in 2009.
