The 2019 Kowloon City District Council election was held on 24 November 2019 to elect all 25 members of the Kowloon City District Council. [1] It was part of the 2019 Hong Kong local elections.

Contents

The pro-democrats scored a historic landslide victory in the election amid the massive pro-democracy protests, taking control of the council by securing 15 of the 25 seats. The Democratic Party emerged as the largest party, overtaking DAB with 10 seats.

Kowloon West (constituency)

The Kowloon West geographical constituency is one of the five geographical constituencies of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. It was established in 1998 following a reform to the electoral system for the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. It currently elects six Members of the Legislative Council using the Hare quota of party-list proportional representation. In the 1998 election there were three seats. The number of seats in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 were 4, 4, 5, 5 and 6 respectively. The constituency corresponds to the districts of Yau Tsim Mong, Sham Shui Po, and Kowloon City.

Civic Party

Civic Party is a pro-democracy liberal political party in Hong Kong. It was established in 29 March 2006 by a group of barristers. Led by Alvin Yeung and chaired by Alan Leong, the party is the fourth largest party in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, commanding four seats. It also has 33 seats in the District Councils.

League of Social Democrats Pro-democracy political party in Hong Kong

The League of Social Democrats (LSD) is a social democratic political party in Hong Kong established in 2006. Chaired by Raphael Wong, it currently holds no seat in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong after the disqualification of its sole legislator Leung Kwok-hung, the key person in the party.

Starry Lee Wai-king, SBS, JP is a Hong Kong politician, chairperson of the largest pro-establishment Beijing-loyalist party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB). She is a Legislative Councillor for the District Council (Second) functional constituency and a Kowloon City District Councillor. From 2012 to 2016, she was a member of the Executive Council.

Kowloon West New Dynamic

Kowloon West New Dynamic is a district-based pro-Beijing political group in Hong Kong. It was founded by a group of local politicians in the Kowloon West area on 16 March 2008. The main focus of party is to improve quality of life in the districts within the area which including Sham Shui Po District, Kowloon City District, and Yau Tsim Mong District. Priscilla Leung is the current chairman. The party currently holds seven seats in the District Council of Hong Kong and one seat in Legislative Council of Hong Kong.

The Kowloon City District Council currently consists of 25 members, of which the district is divided into 25 constituencies, electing a total of 25 members. The last election was held on 24 November 2019.

The Sham Shui Po District Council is the district council for the Sham Shui Po District in Hong Kong. It is one of 18 such councils. The Sham Shui Po District Council currently consists of 25 members, of which the district is divided into 25 constituencies, electing a total of 25 members. The last election was held on 24 November 2019.

Wu Chi-wai

Wu Chi-wai, MH is a Hong Kong politician. He is the former chairman of the Democratic Party from 2016 to 2020 and a former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong for Kowloon East constituency since 2012. He has also been a member of Wong Tai Sin District Council since 1999 and member of the Urban Council from 1995 to 1999.

1991 Hong Kong municipal elections

The 1991 Urban Council and Regional Council elections were the municipal elections held on 5 May 1991 for the elected seats of the Urban Council and Regional Council respectively. The election saw the direct rivalry between the newly established political parties, the liberal United Democrats of Hong Kong (UDHK) and the conservative Liberal Democratic Federation of Hong Kong (LDFHK) which the liberal forces won a landslide victory.

2012 Hong Kong legislative election in Kowloon West

These are the Kowloon West results of the 2012 Hong Kong legislative election. The election was held on 9 September 2012 and all 5 seats in Kowloon West where consisted of Yau Tsim Mong District, Sham Shui Po District and Kowloon City District were contested. Ann Chiang replacing Starry Lee who contested the District Council (Second) functional constituency stood for the largest pro-Beijing party Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong. Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood's Tam Kwok-kiu replacing Frederick Fung who contested the new super seats as well, however lost to his ally Civic Party's Claudia Mo who was not elected in 2008. The ADPL once again lost all the seats in this stronghold since the 1998 election.

2016 Hong Kong legislative election Election in Hong Kong

The 2016 Hong Kong Legislative Council election was held on 4 September 2016 for the 6th Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo). A total of 70 members, 35 from geographical constituencies (GCs) and 35 from functional constituencies (FCs), were returned. The election came after the rejection of the 2016/2017 constitutional reform proposals which suggested the electoral method for the 2016 Legislative Council remains unchanged.

2019 Hong Kong local elections Election held in Hong Kong

The 2019 Hong Kong District Council elections were held on 24 November 2019 for all 18 District Councils of Hong Kong. 452 seats from all directly elected constituencies, out of the 479 seats in total, were contested. Nearly three million people voted, equivalent to 71 per cent of registered voters, an unprecedented turnout in the electoral history of Hong Kong. The election was widely viewed as a de facto referendum on the ongoing pro-democracy protests.

Vincent Cheng Wing-shun

Vincent Cheng Wing-shun, MH is a Hong Kong politician. He is the current member of the Legislative Council member for Kowloon West and former member of the Sham Shui Po District Council for Nam Cheong North from 2015 to 2019. A the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) member, he made an upset in the 2018 Legislative Council by-election in Kowloon West, being the first pro-Beijing candidate to defeat a pro-democracy opponent in an open by-election since 1992.

March 2018 Hong Kong by-elections

The 2018 Hong Kong Legislative Council by-election was held on 11 March 2018 for four of the six vacancies in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (LegCo) - the Hong Kong Island, Kowloon West and New Territories East geographical constituencies and the Architectural, Surveying, Planning and Landscape functional constituency - resulting from the disqualification of six pro-democrat and localist Legislative Council members over the 2016 oath-taking controversy. The by-election for the two other seats was not held due to pending legal appeals by the two disqualified legislators.
