Municipal elections to the Central Municipal Council (CMC) in Qatar were held for the sixth time on 16 April 2019. The official number of people who voted is 13,334, about 1/13th of the Qatari population, and nine percent lower than in 2015. [1]

Central Municipal Council

The first municipal council in Qatar was formed in the early 1950s and it was reorganized in 1956. Doha municipality came into being in May 1963. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs was established in 1972 as a government body responsible for supervising the functions of municipalities.

Qatar Sovereign state in Western Asia

Qatar, officially the State of Qatar, is a country located in Western Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Whether the sovereign state should be regarded as a constitutional monarchy or an absolute monarchy is disputed. Its sole land border is with neighbouring Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) monarchy Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. The Gulf of Bahrain, an inlet of the Persian Gulf, separates Qatar from nearby Bahrain.

Several "young, relatively unknown" candidates were elected in the place of several well-known establishment candidates. [1]

Analysis

A Qatar University pre-election opinion poll found that the most likely reasons for Qataris not intending to vote for the CMC were a lack of time, the CMC's lack of real political power, and the lack of an acceptable candidate. [1]

2007 Qatari municipal elections

Municipal elections were held in Qatar on 1 April 2007 for the third time. Three women and 122 men ran for 29 seats in the Central Municipal Council. About 28,000 citizens of the 174,000 Qataris were able to vote, and overall turnout was 51.1 per cent.

2011 Qatari municipal elections

Municipal elections were held in Qatar on 10 May 2011 for the fourth time. Turnout was 43%, with 13,000 of the 32,000 registered voters participating.

Sheikha Yousuf Hasan Al Jufairi made history in 2003 when she won election to the Central Municipal Council (CMC) in Qatar from the Airport constituency, becoming the first woman in the GCC to ever win a municipal election.

Women in Qatar

Both women and men were enfranchised in the country at the same time, in 1999. Labor force participation rates of Qatari women are above the world average and among the highest in the Arab World, which comes mainly as a result of an increasing number of Qatari women who are attaining academic degrees.

2015 Qatari municipal elections

Municipal elections in Qatar were held for the fifth time on 13 May 2015. Five women contested the polls as candidates. Two women were elected to the Central Municipal Council (CMC) after winning their constituencies, heralding the first time two women have occupied seats in the council. This round of elections witnessed the merging of a number of depopulated constituencies and the addition of several new constituencies.

Al Thakhira is a town on the coast of the Al Khor municipality in Qatar, about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) northeast of the city of Al Khor City and 60 kilometres (37 mi) from the capital Doha. Like other coastal settlements in the area, its inhabitants historically relied solely on pearling and fishing for sustenance.

Al Rayyan (city) City in Al Rayyan, Qatar

Al Rayyan is a city in the municipality of its namesake, Al Rayyan, Qatar. It is the second-most populous city in Qatar, with a population of 605,712 as of 2015. Consisting of all of the districts in the municipality's easternmost section, its boundary cuts off at roughly the point where the Al Majd Highway runs through the municipality. It is considered a part of the Metropolitan Doha area. It is one of the proposed venues for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
