Administrative divisions (municipalities)

The first general elections for the Consultative Assembly were scheduled to be held in Qatar for the second half of 2013, [1] but were postponed in June 2013 until at least 2016. [2] In 2016 they were postponed again. [3]

Background

The elections were originally scheduled to be held in the last six months of 2013, but were postponed prior to the retiring Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani transferring power to his son Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. [4] The Consultative Assembly's term was extended until 2016 [5] and then until 2019. [3]

In October 2019 the Emir issued an order for a committee to be formed to organise the elections, chaired by Prime Minister Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani. [6]

Electoral system

Men and women aged over 18 are eligible to vote for 30 of the 45 seats in the Consultative Assembly according to the 2003 Constitution of Qatar. [7] [8]

Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Abdullah bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani was the Emir of Qatar from 27 February 1972 until he was deposed by his son Hamad bin Khalifa on 27 June 1995. He was the grandfather of the current Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

House of Al Thani

The House of Thani is the ruling family of Qatar, whose origins can be traced back to Banu Tamim tribal confederation.

Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani was Prime Minister of Qatar from 29 October 1996 to 3 April 2007. He served as an advisor to the Emir and often represented him at ceremonial events and receptions.

Consultative Assembly of Qatar

The Consultative Assembly is the legislative body of the State of Qatar, with 45 members. Following the first Qatari legislative election, it will have 30 elected members and 15 appointed members.

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Emir of Qatar

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani is the Emir of Qatar. He is the fourth son of the previous Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Tamim has held a variety of government posts within Qatar and has been at the forefront of efforts to promote sports and healthy living within the country. As of 2018, Tamim is the youngest reigning monarch among the GCC countries.

Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani

Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber bin Mohammed bin Thani Al Thani is a Qatari politician. He was the Prime Minister of Qatar from 3 April 2007 to 26 June 2013, and foreign minister from 11 January 1992 to 26 June 2013.

Abdelaziz bin Khalifa bin Hamad bin Abdullah bin Jassim bin Muhammed Al Thani, is a member of the royal family of Qatar, House of Thani.

The Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF) was a non-profit organization working for press freedom and quality journalism in Qatar, the Middle East, and the world. It was formally created on December 7, 2007 by Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, and opened in October 2008 in Doha, Qatar. It was closed down on 16 April 2019.

Hamad bin Khalid bin Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani ‎ was a Qatari entrepreneur and Chief of the Qatari police forces. He was a member of the House of Thani and cousin of the former Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Qatari royal

Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a member of the Royal House of Thani. He is the brother of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the son of the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, with his second wife Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Abdullah Al Ahmed Al Thani is a Qatari businessman. He was appointed a non-executive member of board of directors of Doha Bank on 3 June 1996 and is also a member of the board of Nasser Bin Abdulla & Sons Group. Sheikh Abdullah is from the Qatari ruling family and a distant relative of Qatar's previous ruler Sheikh Hamad and owns the Spanish Segunda Division football club Málaga CF as well as several thoroughbred racing horses.

Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani is the sister of Qatar's ruling Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and daughter of the country's Father Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and former First Lady Moza bint Nasser. Al-Mayassa was declared the most influential person in art on ArtReview's Power 100, and prominently appears on the Time 100, and Forbes' The World's 100 Most Powerful Women. Al-Mayassa serves as Chairperson of Qatar Museums, and it was reported by Bloomberg that her annual acquisition budget on behalf of the organization is estimated at $1 billion.

Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani is a close member of Royal House of Thani. He is the fifth son of former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the third child of the Emir with his second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al Missned.

Thani bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani

Sheikh Thani bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani is the brother of the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and son of the country's Father Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Al-Thani sits on the board of directors of the Doha Film Institute and International Bank of Qatar.
